We visited Paris in November, which is a great time to visit as it is not the high tourist season. Sacre Coeur and Montmartre were the highlights of our trip. The Montmartre area is like the setting of an old movie. It is quintessential Paris. The walk to the top via cobblestone streets is hazardous at times but not unduly strenuous. For one metro ticket, you can ride to the top. At the top, the view of Paris is wonderful and FREE! A large group of people from around the world had gathered on the steps in front of Sacre Coeur for a sing along! It was amazing to be singing "Stand By Me" in the front of this beautiful place. There was also a puppet show to view (For Free) as well as the stereotypical mime!

We got to this site really early, before ten in the morning. T.he walk up from the metro was like being in a black and white film, this is paris in the rain, moody and quiet. The church is very good and the view spectacular. The little square was full of painters and like a post card. This was a highlight of the trip to Paris. Get there early.

A very beautiful church that looks old but isn't nearly as old as Notre Dame. The view of Paris is scenic but it is pretty far from the other attractions near the Seine. I would make sure I had enough time to see all the other things before coming here.

The basilica of Sacre Ceour which stands at the top of the hill which is Montmartre is one of our favorite places in the world.
The Basilica itself is not particularly old being finished and opened in 1919. The atmosphere is one of peace and tranquility.
The interior is simple, relying to good effect on the graceful beauty of its architecture to impress. Wonderful mosaics adorn the side chapels and ceiling above the alter whilst the high domed roof soars above.
It is possible to visit the dome and the crypt for a small charge. If you go up to the dome be prepared for the typically narrow steep stairways generally encountered in these locations.
Outside the Basilica steps lead down towards the city. We have been to Sacre coeur many times and the steps before the Basilica are always full of people sitting, chilling, chatting and rather wonderfully playing musical instruments, not busking for money just playing for the sheer pleasure of it. The atmosphere is magical. We have never been there during the day or late into night and not seen people on the steps or heard music being played somewhere nearby.
It is a beautiful and romantic place with unrivalled views over the city, the Eiffel tower is clearly visible and the rooftops of Paris spread to the horizon.
The area of Montmartre is arranged up the sides of the hill leading to Sacre Coeur and is itself a delight with bars, restaurants and hotels in plenty on the swooping cobbled streets and squares.
When we visit Paris we always stay in Montmartre, it is a magical part of the city.
If you don't fancy the climb to Sacre Coeur or the steps up from the bottom of the hill a funicular is provided so you can ride up. The climb is not a killer but the ride will be easier.
The best metro stop for Sacre coeure is 'Anvers'
Do it, you will love it, and take the one you love to be there with you, I always do.

There's a lovely view of the Paris skyline from the Sacre Coeur that's worth climbing the steps for! An interesting church but didn't feel as historic or emotive as La Madeleine (which has the added benefit of being across the street from Fauchon) There's a nice vibe after dark with young people hanging out chatting, listening to music in a very congenial atmosphere.
