“Over the top 19th century building left over the the Second Empire”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2014

This building is wonderful. It is the epitome of its era. It doesn't get any grander than this. I think my favorite part is the juxtaposition of the Chagall Ceiling from 1964 with the neo-baroquness building. I remember going to an Opera here in 1970. What a memory

“Good!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2014

This is the NEW Paris opera house, built to replace the ornate Baroque structure featured in Gaston Leroux's novel. The "Bastille" in the title refers to the fact that it was built on the former site of the Gare de la Bastille; indeed, it was even opened on the 200th anniversary of the storming of the original Bastille.

“even if you do not get a ticket..sit on the steps”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2014

Tried to get a ticket but at the evening sales counter only ticket for 185 EUR were left. So declined. Instead sat on the stairs with many other people and watched the opera guests - most of them elegantly dressed - arrive. A street muscian kept the crowd entertained. It was good fun and just the building from the outside is so beautiful.

“Spectacular, but”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2014

This is truly a landmark in Paris, but they wanted about 10euro each to visit. That would be great but audioguides were extra, guided visits were extra, and much of it is closed to the public. I was glad I saw it, but it was only an hour of oohs and aahs over the decor. I wish it was on the museum, but no.
