It was built in the mid 13th century by Louis IX, at the heart of the royal residence, the Palais de la Cité. It was built to house the relics of the Passion of Christ. Adorned with a unique collection of fifteen glass panels and a large rose window forming a veritable wall of light, the Sainte-Chapelle is a gem of French Gothic architecture. We visited the Sainte-Chapelle and were a litte disappointed. Part of the windows in the upper church were under repair and it was difficult to see the relic by the altar. It is a nice place to visit, but a little overhyped and for the short time spent there, I would suggest going to see other sites.

Attended a wonderful chamber music concert while looking at the most beautiful stained glass windows.

Free admission during the heritage weekend (Journee europeanne de patrimoine). The stained glasses were incredible, they tell biblical stories. Make sure to go on a sunny day to really apreciate its beauty.

I have visited here several times before so didn't get the audio guide which I believe is very good. The late summer sun was at a perfect angle to illuminate the beautiful glass in the upper chapel and there were not too many people there. I found the audiovisual display in one corner very distracting and could have done without it, but most of the other visitors made a bee-lilne directly to it so I am obviously in the minority. It is the glass most visitors come to see but the gilded statues are interesting and the carvings on the upper door are stunning and really well preserved. Tthere was restoration work ongoing which meant several of the windows were boarded up and there was constant background noise - the price for preserving such a beautiful place and ensuring we can still be visiting in twenty years! The shop downstairs is quite good and has some nice things strangely cheaper than other sites!
