Including some of the obvious large landmark buildings (D'Orsay, Bastille, Les Infants, etc), are some of Paris' local neighborhoods. There are relatively quiet residential and business streets. There are schools and universities. There are parks. There are very few tourists. If you have the time, as I did, explore. Just walk street after street, stop into local shops and cafes. Get a sense of what it might be like...besides expensive...to live there. Down near the periphery road of the 14th and 15th, there are Sunday 'flea markets'....yes, some tourists like to slum once in a while...but mostly it's locals. Lots of restaurants. Some nice hotels. But it's a lightly traveled area, tourist-wise. On the other end, NW, across the Seine...go to La Defense. Contemporary, high-rise office buildings, large plazas, for a 'modern' area of Paris. Avenue de la Grande Arme, the NW extension of the Champs Elysees, lined with car and motorcycle dealerships...a good Place to find a Harley-Davidson Paris shirt for a friend or yourself.

Our hotel was a block away from the Latin quarter restaurant district. At night this place came alive. There was so many choices to eat the restaurant people always tried to flag you down to choose their place. Just politely said no thankyou and they left us alone. Prices were very reasonable too. No 5 star restaurants but alot of very good ones to choose. Most had really cool interiors. Streets were cobbled and narrow which made for a cozy walk with no cars

The Latino quarter is very charming. Especially the good old Shakespeare bookshop. I recommend to buy some good books and cuddle the cat. Otherwise there is a lot of tourist dining places. The area is crowded.

A vibrant quarter full of shops narrow streets, student's life and restaurants ( a lot of cheap-to-medium eats). There is not very monumental but it contains st. Sulpicius church the Luxembourg Gardens the Pantheon and the Cluny Museum. I didn't spend there much od a time but paid a visit to there for a while since no trip to Paris can be considered balanced if it doesn't contain the latin quarter
