There was a time when montmartre was lively, fascinating, authentic and fun. Now it is just crammed with over-priced sidewalk cafes and heaps of junk souvenier shops. Made worse by teeming crowds. By all means tick it off your "to do" list and take some photos, but there is no enjoyment in it. Pay too much for food and be jostled by crowds for basically nothing.

The many steps up to the monument may feel tiring to the elderly/unathletic but the result when you reach the summit is truly superb. With old shops, independant cafes and galleries it pictures the ideal Paris that everyone imagines. The well kept streets and the cathedral itself are only part of the beauty with the unbelievable view acting as one of the main events. The clear views of Parisian life aswell as its immense history are displayed wonderfully on all angles of the hill and especially the steps in front of the religious monument, as the most famous landmarks can be seen and enjoyed from a wondrous height.

The flurry of small drinks cafes and vehicles allow for an enjoyable time, especially with children who make want a quick drink and even adults who would prefer an alcoholic beverage alongside the picturesque views of the city.

Overall an enjoyable experience for all. 10 /10 would recommend

We signed up for a foodie tour in Montmartre and it was very interesting. We had the chance to sample numerous goodies along the way and it was a great way to see the area. Easy to get to by the Metro. Area is busy but you get that most places you go. Wonderful views of Paris. This is also where many of the famous artists like Picasso and Monet spent time.

...but crowded :-) I really liked this place, and we recommend going all the way up to the tower so you will get the full view of Paris!

Once you get away from the tourist shops on the way up to Square Louise-Michel it is great just wandering around the back streets. Lots of interesting wee shops and great looking buildings.
