Owner description: Located right in the heart of Paris in the prestigious of the Hôtel national des Invalides, the museum is to one of the largest military history and art collections in the world, offering a unique overview of the history France. It is one of the 5 most visited museums in France, with over 1.4 million visitors in 2015. A remarkable site full of history, the Hôtel des Invalides was founded by Louis XIV to house veterans and wounded soldiers. It now forms the unique, prestigious setting the Musée de l’Armée. The museum's collections contain over 500.000 pieces, covering a period from the Middle Ages up to the present day and following a newly designed educational route: the armour and weapons of the Kings of France, swords, cannons, uniforms, paintings, photographs, the personal effects of important figures such as Françis I, Louis and Charles de Gaulle, plus the Dome church, which since 1861 has been home to the monumental tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte, its golden dome reaching into the skies of Paris at over 110 metres high.

My son and I both absolutely enjoyed this museum. Yes, the Napoleon's tomb makes it one of the "must see" sites, but the museum is definitely worth it. Just make sure to allocate enough time. We only had about 6 hours on our planned schedule, and we didn't get to finish some of the expositions.

I thought this place was interesting and enjoyed wandering around seeing the whole thing. I thought it was worth the money to see, lots of history, and Napoleon's tomb, what a deal!

Get the Paris Museum Pass!

Note: If you're traveling with little ones, and only get the the Pass for the adults, you still need to get a free ticket at the counter for your l'enfants, as they need to get scanned at the checkpoints to every wing of the museum/entrance to the tomb.

That being said, we enjoy military museums (Okay, me more than my wife) but this was very well done...from the medieval knights and armor section to the additions of prolific Roman and Asian influences in warfare, as well as the WWI and WWII sections. I only wish there was more in English (Some was, but the majority for only en Francais...c'est la vie).

Enjoy the grandeur of the courtyard, chapel, and the tomb...it is almost otherworldly when one looks at the pomp behind a French Emperor's resting place, compared to that were Cesar's ashes were placed after his cremation, truly a dichotomy of the times.

The tomb was enormous. I loved all the fresco paintings in the ceilings of each room and the room to memorialize military members from the war, not just a place for a King.

My husband especially enjoyed Les Invalides. If you rent the audio guide you can focus your visit on a particular theme - we chose Napoleon. You can chose Lousi IVX or WWI or WWII. Then visit the beautiful church that contains Napoleon's tomb.
