A LOVELY HOTEL BUT A VERY UNHAPPY EXPERIENCE
It makes me extremely sad to have to write this negative review of Hotel L’Abbaye Saint Germain in Paris ; but it is deserved. And let me say that until this recent event, our stays had been very lovely.
We have stayed at the Hotel L’Abbaye many many times over the years (even staying there with our families for over a week after the 9/11 disaster), often staying in the Hotel’s premium rooms or its suites with outdoor terraces and were thus surprised by the bad experience we had last month. In the Spring of 2013 we reserved a “ junior suite” for September 2013 and had specifically requested one of the two junior suites on the ground floor featuring conservatory areas and outdoor seating areas. Very special. This ” junior suite” was confirmed by the Hotel at a rate of over $700 per night. In view of our long history with the Hotel and our specific request for one of the two junior suites on the ground floor, we anticipated that our request would be honored. Instead, when we arrived we were brusquely given a room on the fourth floor, Room 42, with , obviously no conservatory area and no outdoor area. Room 42 was a very nice room but in no way a “junior suite.” Thus, we were not, and are not, happy. We understand that no particular room can be promised ( or such is what the Hotel proclaims), but a room type that conforms to the requested room can be promised for over $700 per night . And for the Hotel to call any room it wants a “junior suite” does not make it a junior suite—particularly when it has none of the physical amenities communicated by the hotel and that the confirmed guest is clearly anticipating.
Shame on you Hotel L’Abbaye—after all of these years. It must be that the need to check-in some earlier guest in the a true “junior suite” trumps any loyalty to long time guests —even where that loyalty has been confirmed by a deposit many months in advance..
