“Refinement within 5 minutes of Herme, Poilane, Barthelemy and Flore”
Reviewed April 21, 2012

Travel to 44 countries in 4 decades has caused me to form opinions. Among them is that Paris has the world's best grand elegant palace hotels (eg. Ritz, Bristol, Athenee, etc.) and the best small ones (Hong Kong And Singapore have the best contemporary ones, but that's for another review some day).

l'Abbaye is a delightful example of the excellent smal hotels in Paris. It's about 5 minutes walk to the St. Germain/Rennes intersection, on a quiet side street, close to Luxembourg and all of the left banks sites and shopping areas. Herme and Laduree (for macaron afficionados), Poilane for the best bread, Barthelemy for cheese, Ryst Dupeyron for armagnac and wine...all a short walk.

The lobby area is elegant, with beautiful paintings, tasteful fabrics, multiple sitting areas that lead to the rear courtyard punctuated by a fountain, singing birds and again, multiple sitting areas. The bedrooms are left bank small, and not cheap, but tasteful with contemporary fabrics. l'Abbaye has (mercifully) avoided the trend in small Paris hotels to get funky modern and hasn't lost its character. There is a phenomenon in France to want contemporary; after all, they grow up surrounded by grand architecture, so its different for them as the same grand architecture is different for Americans raised with sterility. But l'Abbaye feels like...Paris, but well refurbished, nice small bathrooms, etc.

The 5th, 6th and 7th are filled with delightful 2 and 3 star hotels; l'Abbaye is one of the gems of the genre, a sound, tasteful, charming left bank 4 star.

Charming and quiet, yet two steps away from restaurants, Metro, shopping. Some of the rooms are very, very small.

we had a junior suite on the first floor. one of the quietest hotels i have ever stayed in. we had a little solarium, with a table and chairs, where we ate our continental breakfast in the mornings. too cold to be outdoors on the private terrace, although we could hear birds singing. no street noise at all, despite being one block from rue de rennes. beautifully appointed room and bathroom, with great amenities. wonderful lighting, and lots of mirrors. good wifi. the staff were very helpful assisting with restaurant reservations and delivering the ice we needed for our tendonitis! the lobby is just beautiful, elegant wood paneling, attractive art, and beautiful soothing lighting. the location is great--short walk to metro and many fine restaurants, not to mention shopping. i highly recommend this beautiful hotel. I would definitely stay there again.

My husband and I stayed in the Classic room while our friends upgraded to the next level. Both rooms were perfect. The hotel is perfectly "French" and the service impeccable. Everyone goes out of their way to make you comfortable and sees to your every want or need. We will definitely stay here again and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The location is close to everything. It just doesn't get better than this!

My daughter and I stayed at Hotel de l'Abbaye last May on our way to Florence. We spent a beautiful three days in Paris, and the hotel is so wonderfully charming that it entices one to linger, even though the city's sightseeing beckons. The Hotel sits within a cozy courtyard, in a classic French building, which used to house and old abbey. It is inviting to pause in the warmly decorated sitting room before venturing further. Our room was of good size - there are larger rooms if one is willing to pay a bit more- with a large window overlooking the courtyard, chintzy fabrics and a cozy bed that made us want to sleep late. Perhaps the best part was breakfast, which is served in the elegant conservatory, or in fair weather, the incredibly charming garden. A continental breakfast is included in the price of the room, which is not common in Paris, while everything else on the menu is a la carte and very delicious. There was a regal assortment of breads and pastries, and the cafe au lait was divine! The hotel is conveniently located, close to St. Germain Boulevard, great restaurants and metro stations. We have been to Paris several times and stayed in many good hotels, but this one is, by far, the most memorable one. We will definitely return.

I love small intimate hotels -no big chain please!- with charm and character and Hotel de l'Abbaye in Paris fits the bill perfectly: wonderful old building, quiet street, great garden (where one can enjoy a drink in summer), wonderful common rooms with a fireplace, bright and elegant sunroom, pretty decorations and furniture -all in traditional french style-, smallish but adequate and wonderfully decorated rooms. It's also convenient, close to good restaurants and the subway and one can easily walk to various attractions (great Luxembourg gardens, perfect for children with marionette shows and extensive activities). We have already stayed twice in this hotel and do not regret our choice: it will be our home away from home when in Paris. The staff is attentive and can recommend restaurants, help make reservations etc.
The breakfast in the morning is continental only but fresh with a great choice of pastries and breads. Only little downside is that while the owners schedule regular updates of rooms, if you stay in a room which is coming up for a renovation, things may look a bit tired or less crisp/polished than in the newer rooms. So it's worth asking for a room which has just been redone. Rooms overlooking the gardens are also very nice and quiet.

Room Tip: Overlooking the garden and recently renovated

Stayed at this hotel for three nights. We asked for a quiet room on arrival and were assigned to a very nice room with big windows facing the gardens. It was great to wake up to the sound of birds and fountain, not traffic, in central Paris.

The room itself was not big but totally charming with classic French interior and thick embroidered draperies. There was no minibar or fridge, but otherwise the room was very convenient with lots of storage place, so it was easy to keep everything tidy. The room service was there several times a day and made the room and bed perfect. Everything was very clean at all time.

The continental breakfast was very nice, and you could also choose between many newspapers to catch up with recent news. There is plenty of food to order at additional price if you do not fancy continental breakfast. The breakfast restaurant itself is totally charming, facing the garden with lots of different birds catching their own breakfast. Too bad the weather was too cold to eat outside.

All i all, a very nice experience. Would definitely return.
