Owner description: The Arc de triomphe was begun in 1806, on the orders of Napoleon I to honour the victories of his Grande Armée. Inspired by the great arches of antiquity, the monument combines the commemorative with the symbolic and it has always played a major role in the national republican consciousness. Every evening, the flame is lit on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the Great War. An exhibition portrays the history and explains its symbolic importance, nationally as well as internationally. The terrace provides superb views both by day and night across the city and its great sweeping avenues.-Opening hours : April to September: from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; October to March: from 10 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.-Closed: 1st January, 1st May, 8th May (morning), 14th July (morning), 11th November (morning), 25th December-Entry fees: Adults = 9,5 €; Concessions = 6 €; Free admission: 18-25 years old* (citizens of one of the 27 countries of the EU or are non-European permanent residents of France) * excluding school groups

Well all I wanted to do was walk up the arc de triumphed and over look the road. WOW. I could never imagined it to look like this in real life. 12 avenues in one round about. The traffic is incredible to watch. Loved the walk up but it is taxing, a rest at the top is recommended. So much to learn about. We even had the opportunity to witness a military ceremony late in the afternoon after coming down the stair , it was amazing.

People seem to complain about how many steps there are to get to the top. I met a few of these people on the way up, and they were, I'm sorry -- overweight Americans. Once on top, you are at a hub looking down at the spokes of no fewer than 14 boulevards and avenues radiating out from here. This a great place to come early in your first visit to Paris to see where everything is. After visiting Paris on a number of occasions, I finally went up here. Don't miss it.

Centre of a roundabout. Huge. Beautiful eternal flame. Dangerous to try and cross street to reach it, there is a underground pass. We choose not to climb the steps as we were pretty tired but I was told it had great views of the city and Eiffel. Don't need more than 30 minutes if not climbing. We just walked down the famous champs élysées after our visit to the arc.

I was determined to get to the top and yes, there are soooo many steps but it's worth it. The view is beautiful and it was really cool to look down and see the people on the street under the arch. Another representation of beautiful French architecture!!

The Arc de Triomphe was much more massive than I expected. Since we had the Paris Museum Pass, which includes going to the top, we climbed the stairs to see the views. With the pass, we didn't have a wait to go up at mid-evening. This is a great spot to photograph the Eiffel Tower. We debated staying until the Eiffel Tower lighting, but as the workers were on strike, we didn't stick around to be disappointed. I would recommend this attraction in the evening as an alternate way to view the lighting of the Eiffel Tower. There is also an indoor floor before reaching the top with public restrooms and places to rest - some interesting sculptures, too. Even if you don't climb to the top, it's great to go to see the eternal flame and the memorial.
