Don't believe the hype. It's OK for a drink, and to tick it on your list of things to see and do in Paris. But it's expensive, the service isn't great, and it's an anti climax.

We went into Harry's Bar after reading about it on-line. After walking through the saloon doors the barman asked us if we would like to hear some music & ushered us downstairs. This was just great, a small bar and saloon with lots of pictures on the walls depicting the history of the bar, nice table service (and it was VERY busy), great (but as it's Paris -expensive!) drinks and some fantastic live jazz right in front of us. We stayed for a couple of hours and it was brilliant. Thursday night in Harry's - loved it. And if it's good enough for Hemmingway & F Scott Fitzgerald then it's good enough for us!

We visited this bar in September (9th) wanting to explore this Harry's Bar versus Venice's. We went with our daughter and English boyfriend. The bar was so extremely disappointing. Extremely rude bartender/waiter (tall black hair around early 40's) who insulted my daughter's boyfriend and demanded that he sit down and he would come over to take the order (we had already waited 15 minutes with no service on a less than 1/2 empty bar). Eventually ordered, of course, the Bloody Mary's, and there was absolutely nothing special about them. The bartender/waiter never returned, either to ask if we wanted another order, or to even attempt to deliver the complimentary nuts that most tables had (and were still receiving) except for maybe two other tables (apparently other Americans) - incidental but nonetheless obvious. This bar does not even come close to the Harry's Bar in Venice - which has style and at least a professional atmosphere. This was really our only poor experience in Paris during our week's stay.

On one hand this place is a dive bar. On the other hand, famous people like Hemingway used to hang out there and they supposedly INVENTED the bloody mary. The long story short is that there are MANY better things to see/visit in Paris. So, I would suggest swinging by for a QUICK bloody mary and then rapidly moving on! There is no need to spend more than 20 minutes in this bar.

This bar was shipped from the US to Paris, it's got great swing doors and you could be anywhere in the world in this bar. There are two floors but it is pretty small. I think if you go late then it is really busy but as we went for a quick drink before dinner we managed to get a table. It is a cocktail bar. They serve cocktails. If you do not want a cocktail, I'd recommend going somewhere else.

The service is bad, you have to walk up to the bar to get someone's attention for the table service. The cocktails on the other hand are lovely. For a quick drink if you like cocktails I would recommend this bar but I can imagine the service only gets worse when it is busy. You do get snacks with your drinks and it was a nice place to relax before moving on. If you're in Paris, pop in for a quick drink.
