Owner description: This famous cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture on which construction began in the 12th century, stands on the Île de la Cité and is the symbolic heart of the city.

Visiting Notre Dam is like going on a pilgrimage. This was my first visit (although my wife had seen it before) and I was looking forward to it. It did not disappoint. To think that the cathedral has been around for 850 years is mind boggling. It is on the east side of the Ile de la Cite. We got there fairly early. There was a long line to go into the towers with a long wait. There was a line to go inside the cathedral but it moved relatively fast. The organs and the stained glass windows are famous. We were not lucky to hear the organs. Cameras are allowed inside and although flash photography is prohibited, people were using flash every where. The stained glass windows are some of the most beautiful I have seen. The people we met were from all over the world. A definitely must if you are visiting Paris.

When I last visited, many years ago, the square in front was a wide open space. Now there is a bandstand built on it, which in so e ways is good because you have somewhere to sit and admire the building, but it takes away from the vastness of the cathedral when you first walk up to it.
Inside is of course very beautiful, but the crypt which holds museum pieces is all in French apparently...my husband went in (I didn't...and I'm the French-speaker..ish!) and was quite disappointed that he couldn't understand anything about these internationally significant artefacts.

It's Notre Dame - so if you're in Paris, you should see it. There are free English tours every Wednesday and Thursday (at 14:00) and every Saturday at 14:30. There are these rather large stadium-style seats facing the church which are totally out of place, but it's a nice place to sit and look at the church. Even if the line to enter is long, it should still move rather quickly. Definitely see it.

Hard to believe its 850 years old in 2013. Those days things were made to last - I am not a big church/cathedral fan but this is truly amazing. High ceilings, carvings, stained glass, opulence - peace!

We took a blanket and a picnic to the park at the base. Got there a little before dark and watched the lights come on. So much fun. Then just took the Metro back to our hotel.
