We stayed in an apartment right near the place des Vosges for two weeks in June. It's a lovely, peaceful area. The square has lawn to sit on, fountains, and benches to sit and relax. There are stores and art galleries around the square, as well as some nice cafes and restaurants. The Maison Victor Hugo is at the square and worth a visit ( and free!). On the weekend, there were some artists selling their artwork under the arches around the square, too. We loved this area. It's a quite respite from the bustle of the city.

I arrived here unintentionally after visiting the History of Paris museum. I walked up to the Bastille lured by the thump thump of dance music which turned out to be a gay pride parade! I needed to recover after walking my feet off and turned into a lane which led to the beautiful enclosed garden of the Place des Vosges. I sat at a cafe under the colonnade area and ate a croquet Monsieur and drank a glass of Sancerre and loved myself sick in this fine location. The buildings surrounding the park include Victor Hugo's house but my feet had reached their limit and I sat in the park and breathed in the air, the atmosphere and the sheer Parisian joy of this little oasis on a Sunday afternoon.

The Marais is not my favorite neighborhood. It and Rue Rivoli generally are way too crowded for my taste. But Place des Vosges makes for an excellent break from all that -- spacious, a lawn to sit or play, places to stop and get a drink, meal, and the maison de Victor Hugo.

Such a lovely spot. Architecture grand and french - and setting very picturesque. We were there on a sunny day, it is such a lovely Parisian setting.

Nice art galleries in the archways and restaurants. cool area for people watching!

If you head in most directions off the square you will find nice little boutique shops and restaurants. We found a lovely courtyard to just sit and enjoy the birds singing, walled ivy and near the 'Victor Hugo' house.

A shame some folks reviews have says its just a square?! It is - but it's beautiful and romantic - the essence of Paris is right here.

Not sure it's met beautiful in the world, but the symmetry is interesting. The park has free wifi. The enormous billboard ruined it for me, but we had a great little wine break at a little cafe nearby.
