3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2012

Had a 10 pm reservation for 10, they finally sat us down at 10:50, at a weird L shaped table, so we couldn't all talk to each other.........the food is just average, and expensive for what it is....9 of us ordered tea to finish our meal. 27 euros! (can't they just bring a pot of tea for 10 euros or so! outrageous.

“Overpriced-Questionable Business tactics”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2012

When we walked in we were told that they could not seat us they were full up of reservations. All of a sudden a man rushed over to the podium and said oh no sorry we can seat you now-
The place was fairly empty-and the few couples there were drinking wine and eating olives-that should have been my tip off- drink a glass of wine-eat the olives and leave...
But it was very inviting-the dimly lit room the very effective use to transport you to Morocco or some other destination-candles,dark woods, rich fabrics...
The menu was a bit confusing and again we were advised to order the Formula-oh it would be cheaper-more food-less money-
BY the time we debated on which way to go-choosing a few things and sharing or doing as the server suggested- we just decided to do the formula-
Wine was excellent-a burgundy-with olives-and then it started to get a bit odd..
Took a while to get any food-I believe the first thing was a type of salad-very good-big bowl of cous cous,tagine- chicken-a huge chicken cooked with olives-tasty but a lot of food-and then a tray of different desserts to finish.
Like any restaurant in Paris when we were finished we had to ask for the Check-"le addition"
This is where we should have ran-
he kept telling us our credit card would not work-"you pay tomorrow"-- very odd-
Who tells 2 tourists to pay "tomorrow" so that did not make us feel good and that's after he has tried 3 credit cards that we had been using with no problem in any other establishment in Paris. If we were supposed to pay Cash that should have been made clear up front- the door showed all the stickers for credit cards,
The food was good but not worth the 35 euro per person plus drinks- the addition was a bit sketchy but at this point I was worried that the corner where they suggested my husband go was not safe either.
Needless to say we are just too honest and paid the total on the paper and hurriedly left. This was one meal we honestly felt ripped off-

“A bit noisy and more upscale than the normal Moroccan I'd go to”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2011

The interior was a bit overworked but kept together and we had no problem with service although they were busy. Some belly dancing and large group dining made sure there was plenty of atmosphere and it would not be a good settings for a quite dinner.
Food was good except for the vegetarian that was disappointing. The desserts, as always, too sweet.

“Low quality tourist trap”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2011

Arrived here on a rainy Saturday night without reservation. We thought ourselves lucky to find a table, but it soon became clear why. Outside the terrasse overlooking the Centre Pompidou is pleasant but due to the rain we were forced to sit inside the cavernous, touristy interior - think Arabian Nights, Egyptian pop music, waiter wearing a fez, you get the picture: Orientalism at its most basic.

The menu looked good enough but there was a catch - they offer a menu for 39 Euro and one at 49 Euro, but either the whole table orders it or noone does. The simple request from two members of our party who wanted to make a small change on the 'menu' - trading one type of couscous for another one that was cheaper on the a la carte menu - was rejected and we all had to order from the very overpriced a la carte menu (couscous at 26 Euros !!).

We ordered two plates of mixed hors d'oeuvres - salads, cheese 'brique', aubergine stew - that were pleasant enough. One problem - the cultlery and glasses were dirty, as were the replacements that were brought by the harrassed waitress.

Main course Kefta Couscous was said to be plain, and was the vegetable couscous berber style. My shoulder of meat with prunes and figs was oversweet- not slow cooked with the fruit, as I suspect would have made it better, and the "plate of Moroccan vegetables" it came with was an unseasoned, overcooked plate of green beans and carrots.

I can't say anything about the desserts as by this time all 6 of us were fairly depressed ant having been 'had' so we got out of there as quickly as we could.

Spend 10 minutes by Metro going to a real North African restaurant - I recommend Les 4 Freres on Bd de La Villette in Belleville - and you wont regret it. Go to this place, and you probably will.

“good food, but service could be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2011

My wife and 14 month old toddler went in here after a long walk at the "happy hour". We got 3 half litres of heineken beer for 5 euros each during the happy hour (I think 6-8pm on the Wednesday we went). The young waiter who took the drinks order initially said he will take food orders only after 7pm although it was already 645pm. He agreed eventually to take the order but serve after 7pm and got us menus. We were keen to get back to our hotel as soon as possible bacause of our toddler, as people were smoking in the small garden area where we were seated in front of the hotel (opposite the Pompidou centre), at a not too clean table. However, even after signalling a couple of time the young man did not return to our table but an older waiter took our order around 715pm. The food was promised in 20 min, but arrived around 45 min later. My wife had a chicken kebab style dish with vegetables and cous cous. The chicken was well cooked albeit bland, but the vegetables with cous cous was delicious and a generous portion. I had the lamb shank with almonds and dates/prunes, and this was undoubtedly delicious with the meat cooked just right, served with some crusty fresh bread, a small boule. I finished the lamb and also had a generous helping of the wife's cous cous, as it was a large portion she could not finish. The price including the beers came to around 53 euros. Overall, the rating for the food was above average, but not very impressed with the table cleanliness or the service.
