Whenever we go to Paris we always to to Le Verre a Pied in colourful Rue Mouffetard.
There is a very simple, homely prix fixe menu and the food always hits the spot - hot; delicious, filling. The beef and prune tagine with couscous and the tarte au citron we had this time were both wonderful and perfect for a wet day. You get a carafe of tap water without having to ask as well! Coffee is excellent.
The restaurant is small and is a local bar as well as a restuarant with what looked to be a good range of wine. The decor is very basic, old fashioned and traditionally Parisien. The photographs that cover some of the walls are fascinting. Seating is on wooden benches and the toilet is the good old traditional 'hole in the ground' - but very clean. The walls are nicotine yellow, lined with old mirrors,. There has been no attempt to decorate or tart-up and that is part of its charm. The husband and wife team who own it are lovely.
Rue Mouff is packed with tourist restaurants but Le Verre a Pied seems to attract mainly locals - it is not glossy or 'in your face' - in fact you could easily miss it. The menu is written on a blackboard tucked to one side of the window and dishes are rubbed out as they sell out!
This wonderful slice of old Paris feartured in a scene in the film Amelie but the owners do not take advantage of this, unlike some of the other restuarants featured. It's one of our favourite films, but we only discovered it was used by chance after we visited the first time.
Rue Mouffetard is our favourite street in the whole of Paris and we have been visiting since we spent our honeymoon there back in 1982! This is our favourite restuarant in the whole of Paris (though we also like Chez Prosper in Avenue Du Trone, just off Place Du Nation)
