We stumbled across this restaurant whilst looking for a toilet. It was an amazing find, and we were very lucky to have experienced the food and the atmosphere on our holiday.

“Superb meal at reasonable price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2013

Highly recommended by Lonely Planet, and did not disappoint my friend and I. Very personable service from retired surgeon tourned gourmand. He walked us through his table-side chalkboard menu personally, and matched wines by the glass to our meals with excellent results. The scallop quenelles was exquisite, and we enjoyed the escargots in cucumber "soup" (neige), and foie gras very much. If you want fine food in a quiet, unpretentious atmosphere, this is a lovely gem.

“Not worth the money”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

Dishes at Fermin generally follow the formula of polar, contrasting tastes. Take the pluma ham starter, for instance - mild-mannered meat versus tangy, zesty dressings of strong-tasting herbs (e.g. mint) coupled with olive oil splashed with what appears to be lemon and/or lime. Or the turbot fish - pleasant fillet that's almost cod-like, contrasted with starchy peas and an extremely salty roll reminiscent of a Vietnamese spring roll. Or the passionfruit creme brulee - crazily tart and sour, topped with chocolate ice-cream to throw in the sweet aspect. The exception to the contrast-tasting experience was the scallops with saffron, which while pleasant to taste, was essentially an eggy seafood chowder. Nice, but one could hardly taste the scallops, and I'm hard pressed to give strong reviews for a 24 euro dish with a monotonous taste.

Does the formula work? Unfortunately, no. Simply put, most of it doesn't taste good. I spent my evening thinking about how much I'd paid for overpriced clam chowder, and Sam in turn spent her evening thinking about ten different ways she could've made the dish better. I guess finding 2 scales and a bone in her 27 euro fish-dish didn't help her feel any better.

No plus points for presentation and thoughtfulness either: the fish was awash in pond of green peas, and frankly didn't look at all appealing. Placing a scoop of chocolate ice cream on top of the thin crust of a creme brulee isn't intuitive either, unless one feels compelled to end up feasting on a mash.

Lastly, if you're coming in on a busy night, be mentally prepared to wait a fair bit. The elderly proprietor was too busy entertaining the French guests and couldn't be bothered to speak with us the entire evening, save entry and exit greetings. The young man who did handle our orders was gracious enough to verbally explain the menu to us in English, but he ended up having to do the work of two persons, what with running around to take orders and settle bills, on top of slicing bread and pouring drinks and serving dishes. Overall, the meal could've been shortened by a good 45 minutes with prompt service. Naturally, the disagreeable tastes added to an even more painful wait.

Overall, way overrated and overpriced for what you get. Probably should've headed to Au Bon Accueil down the street instead.

“Best Meal in Paris”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2013

Just returned from 5 nights in Paris, and our meal at Firmin le Barbier was the best of our trip! The Quenelle de St Jacques au safran (scallops with saffron) was unbelievable, it can't really be described it simply must be tasted. The service was attentive and friendly, but not fast... which is as it should be. If you want outstanding food, an authentic Parisian experience, a full evening experience not rushed, and a 5 minute after-dinner stroll to view the Eiffel Tower at night, then this is the place for you.
