We used the RER to get to and from the airport and tp Versailles. The trains are timely, and are generally clean. Be sure to know which direction you wish to travel so that you are waiting on the correct side of the tracks. The trains to the airport have local and express options. In general, it is best to catch the express, unless you are staying at a hotel that is located on the local route. Take care to watch out for pickpockets-they may approach you asking questions to distract you. Keep all valuables in secure locations against your body. These trains travel both above and underground, so it's easy to become disoriented. Many stations have colored footprints to lead you to the proper trains, but it's still easy to become lost in the underground stations. During regular business hours, there are train offices with agents that can help you find your way. It is a great idea to buy a multi-day pass that allows you unlimited use of the RER and local trains. These can be purchased from machines (if you can decipher them and your credit card works), or at the train offices during regular business hours. Just be sure to keep your pass away from your cell phone or other magnetic devices. I had to replace my pass 4 times due to it getting electronically erased.

Took the RER A from the Auber station in the center of Paris on a weekday at about 5:30pm (15:30). The ride was smooth. The train was busy, but not packed. Easy for us to sit.

Be carefull:
Without any warning to you and any purpose or action from you to fool the system you can be trapped in a situation where you'll have to pay 35 euros instead of 10 euros something if by ignorance you get on a direct RER to CDG thanks to a normal undergroung ticket.
Nobody will warn you and no door will prevent you from getting on board with the wrong ticket but a controleur will be waiting for you at CDG station and have you pay more than needed.

We use this service to get to Palace of Versailles and it worked fine. Quite cheap, with 7.80 eur for 4 persons each way. A lot of warnings of pickpockets, but we didn’t see any.

I was a little apprehensive about using the RER B after reading some of the reviews but we had no problems or hassel. Just follow the RER signs from arrivals to the entrance to the platforms for Paris. The automatic ticket machines are easy use, payment by card is the best option. The train only stops at major stations, we got off at Chatelet les Halles, then transfered to the metro for Palais Royal and our hotel. The ticket was valid for the onward journey. The return journey was even better as the carriage was entertained by 2 rappers to much applause.
