As my usual hotel was full I decided to try the Banke as I only required one night.
The Banke Hotel is well situated in the Opera district of Paris. I was warmly welcomed upon arrival by the hotel door attendant and quickly relieved of my suitcase as I was led throughout the spectacular lobby to the check in counter.
I was told not once, not twice but three times in the course of my check in conversation with the front desk receptionist, that I was upgraded to a better room, which always is a pleasure to hear, but seeing that I have no previous yardstick to go by, telling me that I am upgraded does nothing to impress me. Naturally should I like the room, I will want to have the same or better the next time I choose to stay at the same hotel and for the same or at a lesser rate than I paid the first time.
I was also informed that should I choose to have breakfast the cost would be 29 Euros (!) and I would find it served at the mezzanine level starting at 7am. As I would only require a tasse de cafe and a croissant for breakfast, I hardly think it likely that I or anyone would be paying the equivalent of $40.00 for them.
Once I was checked-in, I was led to my room by an eagerly efficient attendant who took it upon himself to show me exhaustively every mechanic and nook and cranny that the room possessed.
I must comment that the staff were sincere, helpful and very pleasant.
The bathroom with tub, separate walk in shower was spotless and well stocked with good quality amenities.
The double sized bed was very comfortable. The room overlooked a quiet side street and was peaceful and calm. Overall I felt that relatively I was getting my money's worth in terms of room comfort and have no complaint at all from that perspective.
My only quibble would be as to how could one justify charging 8.50euros ($11.50) for a can of coke or a small bottle of water or a bag of chips in the mini-bar in the room? The hotel may consider itself a luxury hotel and accordingly charge a mark-up or whatever they want to charge, however there is a fine line between luxury/convenience pricing and outright extortion. I find this exploitative thinking and marketing disingenuous and insulting to the guest.
Across the street from the hotel there is a mini-mart that sold many of the mini-bar items for a fraction of the ridiculous prices, should you require any provisions.
As for breakfast the next day, I went a few doors away from the hotel to Brasserie le Royal (one of several eateries in the immediate area) for my breakfast and was given a choice of 'P'tit dejeuner Francais" for 7.90 euros (less than the price of a can of coke in my room!) or "Brunch Americain" for 11 Euros.
I chose the former which consisted of a glass of orange juice,a large coffee, a croissant and a buttered baguette. The latter consisted of juice, coffee, eggs and ham.
I enjoyed a delightful Parisian experience for about a quarter of what the Hotel was charging for breakfast.
OveralI liked the Banke and would stay there again, I just wouldn't eat or drink there.
