“Chic new hipster hotel in Paris”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

If you are bored by grand-hotels and stuffy chintz chairs à la Louis XIV then this is a modern place to stay for the urban life-styler on a weekend trip to Paris. It is edgy and cheeky (check out the merchandise in the lobby).

Rooms rather large for inner-city dwelling. Colors very much black dominated with a few splashes of white, sombre & intelligent lighting. Loved the chalk writing on the dining room ceiling. On weekends the bar is humming.

Nice trendy hotel... nice and vibrant. But maybe a bit to much.. restaurant in noisy, and not the most comfi for a relaxed diner after work, or having a chat with friends or business relations. However plenty to look at and nice if you're out for the weekends.
Some might prefer a more solid hotel room, without the fancy stuff. I mean... rooms are ok, but not to special. Beds are short (if you're taller then 1.85 your feet will stick out), everything is black, and lighting is very scarce (I dropped my black key card, and couldnt find it back on the floor). You have to trust the house cleaning is doing a proper job because you couldnt judge it yourself.

My room (on the 7th floor) had the airco right above my bed, so it was blowing right in my face and felt very draughty.

Location isnt close to most tourist attractions or musea... and... No easy acces to public transport. 10 minute walk to the closest subway, and then you have to get over to at least 1 other line to make it to the city centre (Terrible in the winter when its freezing and icey, and horrible if its raining cats and dogs!). Costs a considerable amount of time... so if you have a short stay and dont have cemetery père lachaise as your main attraction, then consider a more central located hotel. Taking a taxi to place pigalle or Gard du Nord is 20-30 minutes and easily costs a 17 to 23 euro ride.

Good Wifi in the hotel rooms, and also a computer in the lobby available. There is free porn on the tv. However the selection is from such terrible and tasteless quality that its a shame for the well designed hotel. A serious turn off for most people (not the free porn, you dont have to watch it... but i mean the selection of porn!)
There is a camera on your TV screen, so you can make pictures of yourself in your room... and also can see those of others. Kind of funny thing which made some people rather creative.

Service is very friendly. Especially the restaurant staff is friendly and works hard.
Breakfast is excellent. The burger, offered as one of the best, was a disapointment... doesnt come close to for example the Burger of the Malmaison hotels (Which is amazing). Not bad, but the pizza is a much better choice.

At night the hotel was lively... friday and saturday entertainment in the hotel bar/restaurant with a lot of visitors from outside the hotel which makes the restaurant packed. Nice if you dont want to go out to the centre and clubs (which are mostly like 20 minutes travel time with a taxi).
Maybe not so nice when you are on the 1st floor. (i was on the 7th and didnt have much noise!).

Probably wouldnt stay here again... but nonetheless it was a nice stay, and i'm sure some people love the hotel and come back more often. I can imagine that if you're in Paris with a partner and want some excitement and something different from the standard tourist hotels this is not a bad choice, despite some inconveniences.

Mama Shelter was a great choice, a boutique hotel converted from a multi story car park in an unfashionable part of the city, it is designed by Phillipe Stark and has all his quirky design details from Batman beside lamps to graffiti woven into the carpets. Rooms are small but well equipped with Apple TVs and wifi connections. The cocktail bar is sensational - will remember the cucumber martinis for some time. It 's one big open plan room with table football tables, comfy sofas for lounging and more chalked graffiti on the ceiling, the food here is surprisingly good too. Not too far away we found a 1950s bar with a small jazz combo playing, the guys wearing Homberg hats and the patrons actually clicking their fingers to the beat! Just wondered where Hemingway was.

Stayed for a night whilst on a 2 day working trip to Paris. Made the booking in the lobby & got the online rate. Rooms are very cool & clean. The bar was excellent & packed in the evenings as it seems it's a 'trendy' bar/restaurant. Don't know about the food as I ate out with a collegue. But, judging by the amount of full tables, I guess the chef must be doing something right.
Even better for my needs, there's an underground carpark beneath the hotel.
I'd highly recommend it. The staff were very helpful without being over friendly. 5 stars all round from me.

I stayed here for the weekend of the Paris half marathon. The hotel is very cool and it didn't surprise me to see it mentioned in the Paris Wallpaper guide. I stayed in the Mama Luxe room with a friend, the bed was big and comfortable and the iMacs in the room were a great touch. The bathroom had a large shower but no bath and there was little storage, also the room was full of lamps which were difficult to turn on and off instead of a 'main' light however there was still plenty of lights when they were all turned on. The hotel was very cool with quite a modern chic crowd. The staff were very helpful and the pizza bar next to reception was great. The bar was very noisy and from our second floor room we could hear the music quite loudly. This wouldn't normally bother me too much but because we had to get up early the next day for the race it was a little annoying. Despite the dodgy lighting and noise I really enjoyed staying in the hotel as it is quite unique

Room Tip: Book early to get the cheap "Mama" rooms

Great place to stay when in Paris. Innovative, young, easy going and in a great neighbourhood. Used to be the outskirts of Paris and is now becoming a hotspot for the creative. And just around the corner two brasseries where you can eat either couscous royale or a good french meal.

Dim in the room with mask (batman?) hanging on the bedside light. Small set up with a big mirror in the room. This is not a ordinary hotel compare with other. The furniture and fitting from the reception area to restaurant and to the room were so unique. The front office staff was so helpful to solve your problem and request. Location was not so desirable and with the surrounding neighborhood, it might not be a good selection for family. The restaurant was packed everyday during dinner. The food was good but the serving size was huge that lot of food wasted.
The negative part was the bed and pillow with cigarette smell (not only my room but my colleague room as well)
