“Don't bother!”
Reviewed November 12, 2011

I backpacked around Europe for 4 months staying in all sorts of hostels and this is definitely the worst of the lot! Location: bad! So far away from any where, didn't have any Parisian feel to the location at all! Cost: ridiculous to pay EUR38 for a 6 bed dorm room with out even a ensuite bathroom! Check in: disastrous! 2 Busabout coaches arrived around the same time and I stood in the line for 55 minutes to check in and this is no exaggeration, there were still about 20 people behind me! (I'd been travelling with Busabout for 2 months and no where else had this problem of taking forever to check in a bus full of tired backpackers at 10pm!). Cleanliness: definitely below average! floors in the room were sticky, rooms were smelly, toilets were blocked and there didn't seem to be any cleaning staff around. Needless to say I was glad to leave and definitely won't be back at this place!

This was my first experience in a hostel, and I was pleasantly surprised. The staff is very friendly, the beds are clean and comfortable (and have curtains for privacy and reading lights), there are locks for sale for belongings, and free wifi downstairs. It can get a little loud in the evenings, but there are lots of places to sit downstairs and have a nice dinner with friends. Breakfast (cereal, bread, jam, and juice) is also provided in the mornings. Bathrooms were also a nice touch and well-maintained with excellent water pressure.
Overall, I felt very safe here, and satisfied with my stay.

After staying at the Berlin famous hostel, Circus, I was addicted, and decided to try my luck with their Paris location, St. Christopher's.

Though it wasn't a downright disappointment, to me, it definitely felt more like a budget hotel than a hostel. It lacked the intimate vibe that I was looking for, and while there was a bar downstairs, it wasn't designed for mingling and meeting new people - plus, the discounts weren't all that impressive...

I did love the spacious rooms though - elevators are always a plus, and the free walking tours begin right at the hostel, which is always handy. Each of the beds in the rooms have a small curtain which ensures privacy and that you won't wake up the others when you stay up late for reading etc.

A good place, but note that it is a bit of a walk to the metro.

This is a great hostel. I'm not remotely bothered about whether or not it's large or commercial or a chain - it just ticks all sorts of boxes and gives you what you need in a very easy, good value package.

The hostel is in a pleasant neighbourhood (but not particularly buzzing like other areas of Paris). A short walk brings you to to two metro stops on the number 7 line (pink), with a direct metro to the Latin Quarter (Place Monge/Jussieu etc). Pretty hassle free.

Loved the privacy of the curtains in the bunk beds and very handy to have a reading light as well as personal plug points - why don't other hostels do this? Big locker for each bunk bed - large enough to hold a big suitcase or rucksack but the padlock I'd brought was too small - this is my travelling tip (see below). Lockers in basement though were good value as far as I was concerned - happy to pay a few coins for peace of mind and handy that there were different sizes and prices of lockers, so you could save money by using a smaller locker if you liked.

Room was spotless when I arrived, as were both sets of bathrooms on the floor. Showers cleverly designed so you have an area within the cubicle where you can leave your clothes without getting them wet from the shower.

Couldn't get wifi in the room but free access downstairs in the buzzing bar area. Looked like the perfect base to meet other travellers and have a few good value drinks. Even locals seemed to pop in and hang out there just for the buzz - a couple I met didn't even know it was a hostel, it just looked like a cool bar to them.

Breakfast adequate and a good start for the day - baguette, spreads, juice, coffee, cereals. Doesn't get much more complicated than that in a hotel in France anyway - straightforward contintental.

Staff friendly and efficient, and full of good advice.

What more could you ask for?

When I was checking in, the staff we asking a woman on crutches to take 5 flights of stairs to her dorm because their lift was broken - I should have taken this as a sign. The dorm bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a week, the beds were little more than mattresses on the floor and the WiFi only works in one room, on one floor just to start. I would not recommend staying here to anyone I any less than fully despise.

Room Tip: Find somewhere else. If you're disabled you probably want to specify that when you book so they...

This is one of the big hostels, but a good choice. great location, 5 min from tube, bike rental station right in front of the door. Couple of decent restaurants in the area, its a mixed area, so lots of maroccan, chinese, african cuisine.
The rooms are nice and spacious and you have curtains for privacy and reading lights in the bunk beds. The rooms have a sink, which is good as well. There are metal cage lockers under the beds, you need a padlock (or you can buy one there).
Internet is very expensive (think it was 2EUR for half hour). Breakfast is very good, plentyfull, but crowded! It has a bar and I think there even was a disco downstairs, but you dont hear any of it in the rooms, nice and quiet good night sleep, no noisy street.
The staff were very helpfull and are very knowledgable of the area.
They have lockers in the basement (again, expensive), which you can use for luggage storage.
The hostel even offers free tours of the city, which is great if you want to make use of it.
Overall a very hostel for the masses, don`t expect a charming mini hostel but an effective, organised, commercial experience.
