“Van Gogh/ Hirosige exhibit was a treat”

We knew that Van Gogh had been a fan of Japanese artists. What we saw at this exhibit was the extent of the fascination and the quantity of work influenced by Hirosige and others. This was an hour visit - not too long -- but a great filler within walking distance to our hotel.

We walked from Madlaine to the Opera and happened by this museum, that I have heard of before. It's definately a place to come back to.
It's good in size, so you comfortably spend 45-60 min, but its not huge. The commentary on the walls of the Van Gogh exhibition was only in French, judging by other postings that seems to be the norm here.
Sometimes the "connection" between the Japanese artwork and the Van Gogh's was slight or even doubtful. Yet the choose of colors, the simplifications clearly point towards that direction as a influence on him and possibly also other impressionists.

I went to this special exhibit Jan 29, 2012. There are many (20?) paintings of his, most from a museum in Holland. We did not have to wait in line or buy an advanced ticket. The theme is Japanese art that influenced his art. Just as a heads up, everything is in French only. It is 10euro for the exhibit and the gift shop does have a guide in English but it is 6 euro. Van Goghs paintings were a treat to see. Also make sure you look at the attached photo exhibit showing striking portraits of survivors from the Japan sunami/earthquake (included in your entrance).
