“Decent local cafe/restaurant in the Marais”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

We went to Les Philosophes on the recommendation of our hotel front desk. It was close by, there was no need to book, the food was good, the service great fun, the atmosphere was buzzy and very local. We had no expectations and were pleasantly surprised which is probably how all travel should be!

“Good food, check your bill”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

Food was good with reasonably generous portions, especially the large entree salads (we liked the chicken liver salad). Nice, light room on corner. We went here early in our trip and it seemed a bit pricey compared to places we ate later. The waiter added 20E to our bill when he swiped my credit card. It was hard to know whether or not this was on purpose, but check your credit card receipt before you sign.

“Not a great restaurant anymore!”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

We have visited this restaurant several times over the years and have enjoyed the ambience and the food. Our dinner last night was a huge disappointment made worse by the fact that we invited friends that had never been there and talked about the place as special. NO! The food was not good. The onion soup was terrible. The fish did not have enough sauce. The Boef Bourguignon was dry and served with a fried potato. The creme brulee was even disappointing. The only good thing was the service. They added a new dining room at the back - but it is clear that they did not change the kitchen to keep up with the added tables. Something is wrong! We will not be back to see if it was a bad night.

“Decent neighborhood restaurant”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

I stumbled into Les Philosophes a few hours after arriving in Paris, hungry and jet lagged. I honestly don't know exactly what time it was, but it was not a conventional meal time. The dining room was pleasantly full of locals, but with a few tables free. I ordered the Plat du Jour and a glass of the wine of the month. The food (braised lamb shoulder with tagliatelle) was solid and basic, but a little bit expensive (18 euros with the wine). The portion was generous. The service was prompt and competent, and while the waitress wasn't exactly bubbly, she was kind, and tolerated my imperfect French. This would be a cozy place to stop for a meal or a drink with friends.

“I was slightly underwhelmed”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

The food is a little over-priced for what it is and I'm not entirely sure if it deserves its reputation, but I suppose that the location makes up for it as I love watching the glitterati strolling up and down Vielle du temple! Oh and the waiters are rude, but I soon got used to the French tradition...
