This restaurant is located an hour drive from Paris nearby the Fontainebleau Castle and forest.
Surroundings are a bit suprising for a one star restaurant since it is in a quite plain street a few meters away from a coin laundry.
The exterior is pretty plain too but the interior is quite cosy and comfortable with around ten tables at most.
Actually this is not bad since it puts you at ease, by contrast with most Michelin star restaurants which usually have this stuck up atmosphere making it difficult to really relax and enjoy.

Foodwise, there are 3 types of menus available, a normal menu at 35+ only availble for lunch and weekdays, and 2 others menus at 50+ and 90+ available both for lunch and dinner.
We had the 50+ menu which was already a real treat.
Dishes were very well presented with a great attention to details and colors. But most of all, dishes had great taste and originality. Very often you get fancy dishes which in the end dont taste much but this is not the case. Each dish has a unique and strong taste making you experience the aromas of each ingredient.
Volumewise it was just right. Some portions looked small but were actually very filling so ended just right, not too full and not feeling hungry.

As for the wine, it was ok with a good and wide choice and prices starting from 30+.

The only small letdown was service with waiters who seemed a bit a lost. It was full at the time so they certainly had their hands full but it was a bit annoying having to wait long just to get a refill of water.
But other than that service was polite and friendly and each dish was well explained.

Overall this is a great place and definitely a great value when you compare the quality of the dishes served and the price of the menu. Usually such a standard would easily fetch a price above 100 Euros so this is definitely worth it.
Definitely recommend it and it s definitely worth the drive from Paris.

The Chef cooks outstanding. He cares not only about how to make original dishes, but also about taste.
and the price is very good, especially compare to the food. For roughly 50 euros you get 4 courses and 4 compliments. definitely it's best restaurant in Fontainebleau. The only thing which can stop L'Axel of getting second Michelin star is service. I wouldn't say it's not good. It's ok. But it's far far behind great food. Anyway for me that's peanuts and you will not feel it after first spoon.

Well, we all have some memorable restaurant experiences, and this one certainly was for me. I mean, this is just a superb restaurant, with great, attentive, well-paced service. The building and the room do not look like much but there are a lot of thoughtful touches like the decoration and the lighting and the fresh flowers. And then there is the food. I had the 52 euro set menu, and it was simply fantastic. The four sets of dishes, of course, but also a lot of little pre- and post-dishes, perhaps another three or four. Let me just describe the appetizer: white asparagus slices, perfectly cooked, with some crayfish and a very thin slice of slightly cooked bacon, maybe a leek and two quail eggs, all this tied together with some kind of sauce. I am sure that this all has some technical name but anyway - to me, it was like piece of great music, a symphony of textures and tastes. Main point is that food CAN be a great, enjoyable experience, and L'Axel is a living proof of that. Thank you, guys, for one of the best meals of my life.

We had an enjoyable meal. We weren't sure about the options on the tasting menu initially but enjoyed all four courses and all the other little tasters in between. Wine was good and staff very attentive. A memorable experience.

Our third trip from London to our favourite restaurant. The tasting menu was, as usual, amazing. Staff are first class. My partner arranged for an exotic fruit birthday cake, made from passion fruit, mango and coconut.....extremely light and refreshing. What a lovely surprise when they included the cost in the tasting menu, he had expected to pay an additional cost.
Thanks to the chef and staff for making my birthdat special.....we will be back...
