“Worth EVERY Euro!”

The food was so fresh and skillfully prepared. Wines were superb, even by the glass. Best lobster ever. The service was impeccable and approachable. We came away relaxed and happy.

“Very good dining experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2013

Fusion of Japanese and French classic cooking with the emphasis on the French part. Restaurant owned and run by French wife Maitre d'hotel and Japanese Husband Chef.

Food was excellent and the only ask would be that the chef includes a heavier weight of japanese influence into the cooking. At the moment the influence is very French.

If you want a special mean in Fontainebleau this is a good one to choose!

“One Star with Two Star Prices.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013

A disappointing evening. The restaurant is very sparsely decorated and my husband had to stare at a blank wall from the table we were put at in the corner, next to a door to the wine cave. The atmosphere was not a happy one but rather quite sombre and the young team worked well but erratically and not as you would expect in a starred restaurant.

We chose to go a la carte and our appetiser of egg, truffles, ravioli of comte cheese and a delicious sauce was excellent. My main course of turbot was rather flat and dull and my husband's wagu beef very good. I had to ask one of the young waitresses to get the sommelier to pour some wine because our glasses were empty and we needed it to accompany the food. In my opinion the sommelier should recognize when the second plate comes to the table and make sure the glasses are filled.

We would not return and cannot imagine why so many people got excited about a restaurant like this when there are so many other fish in the sea.

“'Star' turn food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2013

This Michelin one star restaurant lives up to its credentials. It is small, stylish and chic with matching food of a very high standard. There are stunning amuse bouche to tempt the palate. We then chose grenouilles in a chorizo sauce with figs for one entreé and fois gras in two ways... Glacé and cuit, followed by exceptional turbot in a mushroom velouté. Desserts were delicious too. We called our short holiday our ' art and history' tour! And this meal was art on a plate...high prices as we chose off the carte. We could have had equally good food on the €48 menu,I am sure. Perhaps next time.
Oh..yes. We only booked the same day too.

“Best French dining experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2013

L'Axel is a well known French restaurant in Fontainebleau. We were invited there by our son and daughter-in-law who were living there when we visited them in early July. This fine restaurant is very popular with Japanese as the chef is Japanese. We were very impressed because both food and service were superb! It was way above our expectation. It is well worth the value! We were impressed by the numerous pre and post courses coming out.....pre-appetizer, post-appetizer, pre-main, post-main! Then when we were ready to go after having our dessert, the post dessert came...all beautifully presented and delicious! Allow plenty of time as it took us 2 hours to finish this very lovely lunch!
