We spent one night here on our way to the Alpes. Perfect location a two minute walk into Troyes centre, tucked away behind a walled garden, is this eighteenth century grand house which used to be owned by the French state and reserved for civil service dignataries. Tall shuttered windows , a black cat siting on one of the many stone window ledges and a playful little dog runs out to greet you. The house has been beautifully restored and is full of quirky fixtures and fittings. We had a huge family room with a kettle and tea tray and some lovely touches such as chocolates for the kids. There's a lovely guest lounge to linger in and a seating area on the landing. Staff are super, check in was meant to be 5 pm but we arrived early and they rushed to have the room ready by 3. We were expecting noisy plumbing and a cold bathroom for such an old house but it was warm and modern. . Apart from having to wait for milk for our coffee, (they ran out and had to run to the shops to fetch some), breakfast was charming, served in a grand dining room with an endless supply of warm croissants and pastries, boiled eggs and ham. A memorable stop and highly recommended if you want something more than a formulaic chain.
