Just looking for a night-stop en route from Calais to Lyon and chose Troyes because we saw a photo of the half-timbered houses*. We picked Le Royal for its prices and proximity to town, which was a very easy walk. Actually it was great - very clean rooms albeit small, a friendly receptionist and a delicious buffet breakfast for an extra 11 euros. We were a bit concerned about the parking as none was provided, but we could stop and unload in front of the hotel and luckily found a spot almost opposite (just a few euros - we arrived Friday evening and street parking was free over the weekend). We stayed at a much more basic budget place in Reims on the way back and rather wished we were back at Le Royal!

*Troyes is a hidden gem - fairytale medieval city with a fabulous cathedral, ideal for pottering around.

The first clue is the whiff of stagnant cigarette smoke in the lobby that takes away something of the charm of the old fashioned but not inelegant restaurant adjacent to it.
We should have refused to accept Room 409 as soon as we heard the first component part of the plumbing noise symphony that persisted through the night. There seems to have been three elements, each round commencing with someone in the hotel using water.
So, if you want to get a night's sleep, avoid it.

Room Tip: Don't accept 409

The location is great, the rooms are just ok...not exciting at all...quite small but clean. New beds would make a big difference. The service is very friendly so the great staff covers all the little problems of the Hotel...

The hotel has a good location on the edge of the old town with some parking places available on the other side of the street. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. We had one of the basic rooms, which we got at a discounted rate which made it OK. It was small and cramped with a very tired décor, but we made it work. The big downside of the hotel was that they allowed dogs. Our room had the smell of former dog residents and from the hotel stairway we could hear another dog, apparently left alone in a room by its owner, barking continuously for hours on end. If we had had a room where we could hear the barking, the situation would have been totally unacceptable.

If you are an irresponsible pet owner, this hotel is for you. Otherwise, you may want to give it a miss.

Room Tip: Get a room on the back side if you prefer being off the busy street.

For the last 14 days we have been touring Europe and mainly having one night stops, this would be our worst experience. The staff aren't that into it except for the restaurant staff who where more professional.
The rooms are poky and the bathrooms tiny, the decor is okay and they are clean.
The lift is the slowest, you can wait 5 minutes when no one is using it so you find yourself taking the stairs.
The food is not very nice, it seems to be about the presentation and the taste is secondary. We ordered a bottle of Dom Perignon which wasn't chilled, this was upsetting as it cost us!

Good centrally located hotel with easy access to cheap parking.Easy to check in and out. Ideal for one night or longer stay.Did not sample the restaurant but menu looked good. Close to a wide range of other excellent restaurants in the centre of the old town.

A great hotel for breaking your journey. The room was clean, roomy and pleasant with a lovely view from the balcony. Parking wasn't a problem and the staff were very helpful. There were plenty of places to eat within a short walking distance (less than 5 mins.) and Troyes is a beautiful place to visit in itself. I can't comment on the breakfast as we went to a cafe and eat there.
