“casual/pleasant/french”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2012

That says it all really. I have been 3 times now in 2 years. There are some far more special restaurants in town but this is a good place to pop into for a casual meal. It has a good atmosphere and a nice mix of local and family visitors. The food is very average/ok, there is a nice choice of wines and the price is very reasonable.

“Excellent value for money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2012

This is a very attractive restaurant that could be mistaken for a tourist trap, so we were hesitant about going in. We had been recommended several other restaurants nearby, which seemed somewhat overpriced compared to what we had paid in other parts of France for excellent food. We were very pleasantly surprised. We chose the 3 course menu for 14€ because we saw the people on the table next to us eating something from it that looked amazing. The service was good, the food was excellent. In all we paid around 40€ for the two of us for 3 courses plus wine and coffee. Will definitely return! I see that there are some poor reviews from last year. I can only imagine that the management or the chef have changed since then.

“Good, local restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2012

With only one night in Troyes we we had researched local restaurants and were actually looking for one close by when we came across this one. We liked the look of the menu and were given the option of French or English menus, and all the waiters spoke good English. We chose from the 'formule de 14€' menu and had three excellent courses, including a delicious hake main meal. Admittedly it was a Thursday evening in April, but we did not experience amy of the problems mentioned in earlier reviews. Restaurant was comfortable, service efficient and quick, food excellent, and a three course meal for two including wine and coffee for only 40€. Would definitely return, as would the English couple we were seated next to - it was their third or fourth visit!

“Our preferred traditional french food restaurant in Troyes!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2012

This traditional restaurant is beautiful with its woody decoration, has great service and cook is absolutely excellent!
My husband and I ate there three times already since 1st of January when we had our first try. We liked very much the fish soupe they did on that day that was so tasty. We also liked the grilled andouillettes, the choucroutte from champagne that was so generously served, the excellent and tender boeuf bourgignon we had on a day menu, and the last time was just the best when we invited some friends of us that were on holiday and we all took the coq au vin that was on the day menu... mmmmm... delicious... and we were not the only ones to think this! There were two guys that wanted the same we ordered but the man that seamed to be the chef, told them that they sold off all rooster and that he could prepare specially for them, the same plate with chicken instead (poule au vin! Hehehe). They accepted and they were so happy about that alternative that started to recommend that meal to everybody around their table and had a good laugh with the lady owner. It was so much fun.
The same man that brought us our plates told us that he was the new manager there and was there mainly to improve the management of the kitchen, the day menu recepees and help the lady owner to manage the restaurant.
On that last time we went with our friends, last week, we all agreed that the Grill Saint Jean has become our preferred restaurant in Troyes for traditional French food and we all agreed that I should put a nice comment somewhere on the web to inform people about a great traditional restaurant.

“Good meal in a beautiful ancient town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2012

We found this restaurant by chance and found out it is a restaurant from 1600. Food is delicious; we chose from pre-defined menu with very wide choice of meals; prices are not expensive and restaurant room is very nice. I would advice this restaurant very much for people that visit this ancient town
