“Perfect for a quick stopover.”
Reviewed July 25, 2012

We stayed at Hotel Porte Mars for two nights on the first leg of our three week European honeymoon. The staff were extremely helpul and spoke perfect English (which was great for us as our French isn't brilliant). The room was clean and a lot nicer than the rooms look on the internet. The area around the hotel seems to have been renovated recently and the hotel was within walking distance of all the places we wanted to visit. Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the main road, but we didn't hear any noise at all. All in all, a great little hotel for a reasonable price. We will be back when we return to the beautiful city of Reims!

Nicolas on reception checked us in for our two night stay and he could not have been more helpful. The room was as you would expect from a town centre 3 star but it was clean and had all the services including mini bar, kettle etc. As this is champagne region, I had bought a bottle for my wife and I to enjoy on our last night and phoned down to reception for a bucket of ice and within minutes it was there! Now that's what I call service. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a warm welcome and pleasant stay at an affordable price. We didn't eat in so can't tell you about the food.

There are several things we look for when judging a hotel. Is it clean? The Porte Mars room while small, was clean with no bad smells. The bathroom was small but again, clean and functional. The location is exactly one quarter mile from the train station, an easy walk. The hotel is located across from the Porte Mars Roman ruin. My wife and I, while in our seventies, like to explore the towns we visit on foot. We were able to walk from the hotel to all the major and many minor sites without any problem, including two round trips in one day to the main cathedral: once in sunlight to see the rose windows, and again at 11pm for the free sound and light show (long, but worth seeing I guess). We did not take the breakfasts since there are patisseries all over town. The hotel has an elevator. Our room was at the front on a busy street, but was very quiet. The young ladies at the reception desk were extremely pleasant and most helpful. Will definitely stay here again if we come back again.

The hotel felt a little dated, but the rooms were a pretty good size and were clean and comfortable. The stairs were quite steep though, so be warned. We had breakfast the next morning and it was as you expect from a hotel in France, bread, bread and more bread. Some yoghurt's were available. A rather steep price for breakfast, but its on par with what you et in most places, so no real complaints.

We parked opposite the hotel, in a large amount of derelict land which seems to serve as an informal car park now. I was happy enough with that. It was a short, 10 mins, walk into the city centre.

For us, the location and outside appearance were not the best. The hotel is situated on a corner between two busy streets, and it is a bit of a walk to the main pedestrian area. But if you want to taste Champagne, there are several producers nearby (and one next door). The management has done many things to make the best of what they have. The front desk staff was outstanding. There are nice guest amenities in the rooms, a minibar, slippers, and a small bar in the lobby. The double windows are very effective at closing out all the street noise. The downside is that you must rely on the A/C for ventilation - It is quiet, but blows right down on the bed. Our room was small, but OK, and the bed was average for French hotels. The free parking was a bit strange - across the street at an closed factory, but it worked.

We received a friendly, helpful welcome and our room was clean, recently refurbished and, apart from the hard mattress, comfortable. A kettle and fridge are provided, and free internet.

Although on the corner of a busy street, the window design, with two separate double-glazed windows separated by a 20 cm gap, gives excellent sound insulation.

For an extra cost you can rent a lock-up garage in a controlled car park 100 m down the road; this makes it ideal for wine buying.

We chose the larger type of room and it has plenty of room for two.

Having decided to visit Reims during a busy week not many hotels offered a room for the dates we requested. After checking in and seeing the gastly superior double we went into town and found a very nice hotel which was not available for all the nights we needed so we cut our stay short. We paid for a night at Porte Mars and transferred.

We did eat breakfast on our arrival in a horrible room. While in the breakfast room an employee came through with a trolley of dirty laundry. The breakfast was little more than an egg you made yourself, some bread and coffee or tee.

To say this hotel is tired would be an exageration. It is dreadful and one needs very low standards to find it acceptable. I lived in better Army barracks as a draftee.

Also the location is bad, near the train station and unattractive.
