“A little confined”
Reviewed October 21, 2008

Booked in for 2 nights at the hotel, Hotel is clean and tidy. Rooms are dissapointingly small, with a non ventilated bathroom and the toilet separated by a thin wall from the bed.
Bed is hard and uncomfortable, a rather thin pillow is supplied per guest, and a request for a second pillow was refused, this also being the case for an extra towel (was to be used as a pillow).
Ended up using our coats as pillow supports.
Hotel is nicely situated a short walk from the Restaurant and Cafe strip.
Breakfast is great but get in before the busloads as it was understaffed and the waitress was working extremely hard to keep up.
Its not bad as a mid market hotel, but seems rather expensive for the quality of the rooms.

Although the female receptionist was not very nice, in the lobby the hotel looked rather OK, but it was not. We had the traditional room (€ 93,-) and it was very small. I wonder how small the standard rooms must be (€83,)!! The main problem was the bed. It was not only small, but also uncomfortable. In the evening we waited for nearly half an hour in the hotelbar to order a drink, but there was nobody who could serve us. All the personnel was busy with some group. The breakfast is very expensive and they expected us to eat it in a very small room, because the big room was reserved for the group.

Oh dear!! What a ghastly place!! The lobby area seemed OK as did the receptionist - we arrived there at about 4.30 in the afternoon on spec as we hadn't booked anywhere in Reims in advance and we'd read the review in a travel guide which made it sound alright. We were informed that the only room available was a top-of-the-line superior/deluxe for 106 Euros plus 12 Euros per person for breakfast.
There is an ancient lift (it does work OK though) and we were on the third floor - the corridors were like something form a horror movie with no lighting and huge wardrobes and tatty armchairs lining the walls. Our room, although large was truly vile with dark grey walls, dirty net curtains and shiny, slippery bedspread. There was no wardrobe just a tiny open structure with a couple of hangers and a sort of desk/dressing table which looked as if it had been hammered together from old bits of wood. Incongruously, there was a flat screen TV!! The bathroom was large with separate tub and shower but wasn't 100% clean and the towels were threadbare. Although this is a supposedly three star place we have stayed at far, far better places in France which are rated two star. Breakfast was adequate but not worth 12 Euros - frankly we were just glad to get up early and leave. If this room was their top of the range I dread to think what their cheaper rooms are like. Don't stay here - find somewhere else - wish we had!!!

This is the second time that I have stayed at this hotel and it gave excellent value for money. I would concede that it would not be my first choice in Summer as no air-con and potentially quite a lot of traffic noise at the front. The restaurant is consistently good however and I would recommend trying the more expensive set menu where a glass of wine is served to compliment each course. This hotel has a big French personality so if you like your experiences abroad to be 'just like back home' stick to an American chain. No Mcdonalds in Reims - sorry ;)!

Very convenient in the heart of Reims with parking very close.

Rooms are comfortable, clean with excellent beds.

Staff were polite and helpful, the restaurant attached is very good.

Breakfast was cramped but of good standard.

Overall a good and comfortable base to explore the city, not a five star but neither is the price.

  • Liked — Basic but clean
  • Disliked — Cramped Breakfast room
  • Tips/Secrets — get directions to the public car park where you can get a discount.

Grand Hotel De L'Univers. There is nothing grand about this hotel at all.
We booked this hotel as we liked the description of recently re-fitted rooms and a 'contemporary' description. Our room was not this at all.
We had a small, smelly, hot and noisy room that was on the first floor. We had a choice either boil to death or endure the 24 hour noise of the bus route right outside our window. Had about 2 hours sleep in total.
The en-suite was dirty, the room was also dirty, not what we expected.
I know that this is only a 3* but I would have expected much more than what we got
There is no parking with this hotel, you have to use a public car park which is a good 5 mins walk to the hotel.
DONT STAY HERE!

I wouldn't recommend staying here if you're after a fine hotel experience, but it is well priced, conveniently located for the station and Place d'Erlon and the staff are friendly and helpful. Shocking breakfast facilities though...would recommend grabbing something to eat in the main square instead.
