“A good hotel with a really friendly staff”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

When on a family trip, we booked the Mercure Reims Cathedrale, just because it was centrally located and a very good deal.

All our expectations were exceeded: Despite being built with sometimes too obvious concrete blocks, the hotel has a colourful decor all in purple variations, which gives it both a warm and trendy atmosphere. The furniture is of good quality, modern and fits perfectly.

The staff at the front desk (Daniella, amongst others) were helpful, professional and made us feel almost at home. Added value: we received free bottles of water and cereal bars as a welcome gift.

The room we had was in excellent condition: no scratched wall or door, clean carpet, very nice and comfortable bed, largeTV screen. WI Fi in the room worked fine. The bathroom, though small, gave us full satisfaction.

We also dined there and were happy with the food. The restaurant staff was extremely nice, pro-actrive with our three year old child, checking our satisfaction, interacting with us in small chat.

The evening bartender was sincerely friendly, discussing family matters in a light, non intrusive nor disturbing manner. He presented the chosen Champagne sorts in a professional way and ensured our satisfaction too.

The breakfast buffet was very nice. There was a wide choice, enough to make any diet restriction, even with organic items. The staff, though nice and professional, was not as friendly as the evening staff, but we never felt like we disturbed them.

The only negative issue: the airco/heating system heated up the roomp so much we had problems falling asleep the first night. It went better the second night as we were explained that we simply needed to stop it to cool the room.

Modern hotel in a very good position, opposite a canal for good walks, and a stroll from the cathedral. Very clean with everything you need for an overnight stop. Excellent buffet breakfast. Will definitely return when in Reims again.

We stay here as a halfway point from London to the South of France as there does not seem to be anywhere else with locked parking. It's very convenient if you have a loaded car as there is a secure underground garage. The rooms have been recently upgraded with a rather ghastly purple plastic decor of what appears to be giant balls of fruit....even as part of the bedhead. The room that we were assigned had absolutely no table space to work apart from a strange almond-shaped affair which could barely carry a small laptop - if you removed it from it's place beside the bed. No storage anywhere for several suitcases and barely room to swing a cat. There is a kettle to make tea but we were provided with two nasty paper cups in which to make it, along with two sticks of balsa wood to stir it. Forget having a second cup! The kettle is fixed into a plastic tray and access is difficult with paper cups and tea bag containers in the way. The fridge looks a good size until you open the door and find a tiny room bar with no freezer compartment. It contained a complimentary bottle of water which was useful.
The light switches were impossible to find - especially beside the bathroom...(remember when getting up in the night, otherwise you will be stumbling around for half an hour).
The shower is a one-piece plastic affair (like everything else in the room) that does not stop the water from soaking the floor and the glass panel features more of those giant purple fruits. Beware trying to fit two people into the bathroom...the position of the toilet in such a tiny space means some badly bruised knees!
The bar was being renovated so we were seated near the checkout on some garish chairs more suited to teenage quarters than a reminder that you are in the Cathedral city of Reims.
The restaurant has elegantly concocted meals which look tasty from the menu but have either been warmed from frozen or have been sitting around for 8 hours. So... .edible, but could be so much better. Breakfast on the other hand is a buffet with a good choice of freshly cut fruit and cold meats along with the usual hot food, pastries and breads.
We will probably stay here again for the convenience only. The new room decor is truly ghastly but since we only stay for one night, it's bearable. I would advise the management to throw out the horrid paper cups. For the price, a decent china mug should be provided.

We stayed here for one night in December 2012. The hotel is in very good condition, the rooms more than big enough and generally we had a good experience here. For those looking for somewhere right next to the Cathedral the name of this hotel could be misleading, but it is only a 5 minute walk.
The front desk staff were a little obtuse upon check in but got friendlier by the time we left.

ok, so this is a Mercure and therefore a chain hotel... but the junior suite we ordered is ideal for a family with 2 or 3 children. As Reims is the ideal spot for us to stop on our usual route to the Alps we are sure to use this hotel again. Easy access from the motorway yet very central and therefore ideal for dinner in town.

I've stayed here a few times and this is an excellent business traveler hotel. Free WIFI, great breakfast, and a fine room. Not huge by any means, but a fine little room. My only issue, and this isn't really their fault, but if you room is on the back facing the cathedral there is an alley behind the hotel. One night, there was some sort of delivery truck back there at a ridiculous hour (4am or so) beeping and idling and making a racket. Alas.
When in Reims, I'd stay here or at the Best Western.
