Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Our house is located in the village of Monthelon, 6 kms from Epernay, the capital of Champagne in the « Coteaux Sud d’Epernay ». Monthelon is a typical Champagne village, nestled in the heart of the vineyard. The family has cultivated our vineyards at Monthelon since the XVIII century, but it was only in 1947 that the brand name Julien Chopin was born (or created). Our vineyards are located in the “Coteaux Sud d’Epernay” where Pinot Meunier is the main “cru” (villages of Monthelon, Mancy and Moussy) and in the “Cotes des Blancs” for Chardon-nay (villages of Chouilly, Cuis and Grauves).

Our full-day tour of the area had lunch at Julien Chopin's. It was lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed each of the champagnes served with each course. Highly recommend!

Laure from the B & B where we were staying took us to this small producer and it was most interesting. We started by looking at a vineyard and the different types of grapes that go into champagne (Meunier for example has whitish leaves, hence the name "miller"). We also learnt about the many government regulations that control all aspects of the industry, from acreage and tonnage to the rules about full bottles broken during production.
We had a short tour around the underground cellars followed by a long session with Julien, the owner and winemaker while we tried four of his champagnes - Blanc de Blancs, an excellent Blanc de Noirs, made from an unusual combination of Pinot Noir and Meunier, plus a regular blend champagne and a rosé.
We particularly enjoyed this personal tour and a chance to talk to the winemaker and compare his different champagnes, something you don't get at the bigger houses where you get a taste of champagne and then leave. The tour price was also very reasonable and we left, having bought quite a lot of Julian's fine products.

1  Thank Anne W
