For this year’s trip we based ourselves in Épernay at Champagne André Bergère: 40, Avenue de Champagne. This location is not where the Champagne house is based, this part of the operation being in Fèrebrianges. They do however have a shop stocked full of Champagne mementoes and complete with tasting area.

Several years ago, the premises lay derelict and were purchased from the next-door neighbour: Pol Roger. It would appear that the entire length of the Avenue de Champagne has or in some cases still is undergoing a massive renovation or spruce-up project. Every building seems to have been restored to its former glory as Épernay tries to achieve UNESCO status. It is now a beautiful street and has certainly become the Champs-Élysées of Champagne.

The buildings at Champagne André Bergère are beautifully renovated in the typical French style. As you enter the grand iron gates, the office and part of the bed and breakfast lodgings are located in the building to the right whilst the shop is on the left. The two suites are located on the upper floor of this building. To the end of the courtyard is further bed and breakfast lodging. The courtyard is very smart with tasting tables for when you visit in good weather.

We stayed in Suite ‘Les Riches Roses’, situated at the rear of the left hand building (further away from the main road). The suite comprises of a large sitting/dining area with small kitchenette. This includes a large refrigerator, small hob, microwave and Nespresso machine (although capsules are provided with breakfast it is advisable to take your own as is milk, sugar etc). There is plenty of crockery and glassware to ensure you can be completely self-sufficient if you wish.

Through to the bedroom the toilet is separate to the en-suite which has a very nice “rain” shower. The windows all open wide to give nice views of the courtyard. The room was cold when we arrived but was toasty in no time thanks to the efficient heating/air conditioning system. The bed was a little hard for our taste but that is just a minor note.

If I could add one thing it would be a small safe just for peace of mind.

The suite is still feeling fresh (now about 2 years old) and is nicely decorated and appointed. In such nice surroundings , we felt very privileged each time we drove or walked through the gates.

The gates are closed outside of the shop opening times (so secure night time parking) but guests are furnished with a key fob to activate the automated gates on the side road. This road is one way so if returning by car out of hours, the easiest route is to take the turning next to Moët et Chandon at the bottom end of the Avenue de Champagne, then the first left. Take this road all the way to the end and turn left again. It is in this is the road where the side entrance to Champagne André Bergère is located (on the right).

We opted to take the breakfast which the website advertises as €12 per person although we were quoted in our booking correspondence at €8 per person. Upon departure, this had risen to €10 per person which was a little disappointing. Breakfast is sufficient, a small baguette with pastries and conserves, juice and fruit purée. Occasionally ham and cheese made an appearance too. We were offered a glass of Champagne each on our departure day which was a nice touch but with a long drive back to the UK would perhaps have been better offered on our first morning.

We used Champagne André Bergère as our base to further explore the villages of the Montagne de Reims and Vallé de la Marne. It is just as easy to access the Côte des Blancs as Épernay is perfectly situated for all three. Within 5 minutes you can be in the vineyards.

If you wish to take a day in Épernay alone, tasting is available at Moët et Chandon (turn left out of the gates), Boizel, Paul-Etienne Saint Germain, Esterlin, De Castellane and Mercier (turn right).

To review the Champagne produced by André Bergère, their cuvées are very pleasant but lacking that extra bit of oomph to make them stand out in our opinion.

We enjoyed our stay and will definitely consider staying here on further trips.

Similar to the other reviews did not actually stay in the rooms but Maxime was very helpful in advising on the various Champagnes and We found them to be a very pleasant change from the big name brands. Bought a couple of bottles to take back to the UK to test out and hopefully come back to stock up the cellar with a few cases.

We were after a stop over in Champagne and booked this after reading the positive reviews on here. The communication was fantastic with Maxime and we managed to secure a booking within a couple of hours. We booked the room Les Gouttes d'or with breakfast for 150 euros. (See pictures, taken the next morning).

On arrival we were impressed with the grand, gated entrance and great location, smack bang in the middle of Avenue de Champagne. We were made very welcome and showed to our room where a little bottle of champers was waiting as well as a couple of other things in the little fridge provided.

The room was a great size and ideal as we were travelling with our little baby. I particularly loved the A.Bergere personalised pillowcases! Lovely big bathroom too with massive shower and 2 sinks. We went and had a quick champagne taster and were so impressed with their champagne treated ourselves to their trio of special bottles, very nice!

We stayed for breakfast in the morning which was nice, you are just left to your own devices in the morning until you check out. We had a little selction of pastries, bread, ham cheese etc each and unlimited coffee and tea. It was all laid out very nicely but we shared a table with someone else who was staying there and at times was a little awkward trying to create conversation rather than being in silence!

All in all a lovely stay but the price charged we felt was a little high for the accomodation but I think this is mainly due to the fantastic location. That being said I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and having just the 1 night in Champagne is just not enough!

Room Tip: Tip: Be very careful walking on the rugs on the wooden floors it makes things quite slippy! Tip: Les Gouttes d'or is situated at the end of a corridor and was very quiet.

We rented the self catering apartment for five nights in order to explore the area. It was an excellent choice as it is in the prestigious Avenue de Champagne in the centre of Epernay. We had parking in the grounds behind gates which were locked at night time and the area felt very safe anyway. The room was spacious and very clean and fresh towels were available whenever we requested them. The self catering part is not quite accurate because although there is a cooker and some crockery, there are no cooking utensils, limited cutlery and no glasses except champagne flutes. A Nespresso machine was in the room but no capsules. However, the jewel in this crown was Maxime who could not have been more helpful and lovely. He greeted us on arrival very warmly and assisted us with whatever we wanted over the next five days, including recommending and booking restaurants, locating a laundromat for us, and providing excellent information on where to go. We enjoyed having a champagne tasting with him for €5 for three different champagnes of the property and €10 for two flutes of their vintage champagne, which we found interesting and enjoyable. This man is the key to the success of the hotel and the tasting house and makes the stay extremely enjoyable.

Booked for an overnight stopover on the way to the Alps, a little far from the motorway but worth the diversion. Maxime provided a friendly welcome and was helpful in reserving a restaurant for dinner. Accomodation was excellent and all in all a wonderful location, surrounded by the Champagne houses.
Would definitely return.
