At the second last day of a month long trip through France it was an absolute please to have lunch at Chez Max today. This was the restaurant I had pictured in my mind eating at every day on the trip but very rarely eventuated.

The food was great home style cooking, extremely tasty and faithful to the local and seasonal produce. The prix fixe menu at lunch was 14 Euro!

It is worth mentioning that we speak hardly any French, my wife is vegetarian and we were travelling with a 20 month old. Pretty much the worst combination for heading to a restaurant in France. This is where the team at Chez Max really shined. Wife and baby both catered for without missing a beat. Our inability to communicate were overcome with instant personal recommendations. No frustration - just an "I think you'll like this".

Brilliant. If I lived locally I'd eat here multiple times a week. It seems many do. Everyone in the restaurant had the steak tartare. I missed the memo but hope to return to try it one day.

Quite possibly the best meal that we have had for years.

We had read reviews of Chez Max on Tripadvisor before leaving for France, and my wife booked ahead as we had seen that it gets very busy. We walked from the Ibis Hotel to the restaurant. On the way wondered about getting a taxi back as the restaurant isn't in one of the nicest parts of the town. (Though not by any means rough). There is a large neon champagne bottle sign outside the restaurant and we did begin to wonder what we had come to.

The inside is traditionally French. Very simple. A curtain around the doorway keeps the single downstairs room warm, on a cold night. There are more tables upstairs but I didn't venture up there.

The owner is very welcoming. Genuinely charming and warm. It was not a problem that we were 30 minutes early, and we looked through the menus over a glass of champagne and simple canapes.

We opted for the €38 menu, although the other menus looked good too. My wife had the scallops, and I had foie gras (though we shared the starters, so we could try both). We both agreed that the foie gras was the best that we had ever tasted - it is made by the chef rather than bought in. The scallops were amazing as was the black rice rissotto that came with it.

We had venison and beef for the main courses. Both were presented simply, but were absolutely stunning, and beautifully cooked.

The cheese board, as others have mentioned, was to die for. Pretty much everywhere else we have eaten in France you receive a cheese plate with typically three cheeses on and a green salad. Here, there were 10 cheeses on the board - we were unable to choose amongst them, and so shared two plates between us - One plate having the milder cheeses; the other having the stronger ones. Great choice, as well as beautifully sourced.

For dessert we had a tarte tatin and a creme brulee. Both were delicious.

The bill came to round about €130-140, but included champagne to start with and rather nice bottle of red.

This restaurant is rated as one of / if not the best restaurants in Epernay, and quite rightly so. A fantastic night out with great food and traditional French ambiance. We will definitely go again, and will recommend to friends

As per the other reviews fantastic French restaurant and well worth a visit. The snails were delicious as we're all the courses and especially the divine creme brûlée and great selection of cheeses. The meal was very good value at just under €100 for 2 people including 4 course meal, beers to start some good red wine, coffees and a little snifter of calvados to wash it all down. Frank was very friendly and helps explain anything my school boy French could not comprehend! Definitely a great finish to a day of champagne tasting and we will be back next time.

Our party of 4 gents booked a table at Chez Max whilst travelling up from Italy in the car the same day. We had a great welcome from Frank the owner and maitre'd when we arrived and all four of us had the 28 Euro four course menu. Great '3 pot' fish and wild mushroom starters. Great steak for main followed by cheese board with wide selection (and no limit on number of choices if you promised to eat it!). Creme brulee, chocolate torte and floating island desserts were all good. Nice choice of champagnes (of course!) and wines plus a complimentary digestif made for a great meal and evening. Frank is only the third owner since opened in 1946 and he provides great service and sources some great ingredients. Dated decor yes, very French yes and great service yes.

In my opinion the best restaurant we visited in our 12 day tour through France and Spain.
Small and a bit cramped but buzzy, and very French.
Extremely accommodating - we rang to say we would be an hour late for our booking and they kept the table indefinitely even though all the others were occupied.
The owner speaks good English and all the staff made us very welcome, but the crowning glory was the steak tartare which the owner prepared at the table with great flourish - and it was excellent!!
Not over-expensive.
A real joy and a definite if we ever return to Epernay.
