It is easy to be daunted by the complexity of the wine scene in the Champagne area, especially if, like us, you want to get some sort of handle on the "grower/producers" end of things. There are hundreds of them. As luck would have it, our group of relatively knowledgeable wine drinkers had randomly chosen a house to visit the day before and had a memorable hour or more tasting and conversation with a charming and informative proprietor, freshly returned from the vineyard during vendange. Figuring it would be difficult to reproduce that experience, we opted for the structured tasting at C. Comme and had yet another great experience.
The flight of six wines was intelligently designed. First three were a 100% varietal wine to showcase each of the three varieties of the region and their characteristics. Then a blend of all three base wines in roughly the same proportions. And to finish, rosés made in each of the two methods used (adding still red wine to give colour or extracting colour from a short period of contact with the red skins). Accessible and instructive to anyone with an interest in finding about the wines, no matter what their level of experience. And the servings sufficient to ensure you can return to a wine as the observations and information flows. Of course these single wines were not claimed as typical of all of the "type" - the next challenge is to explore the differences within types...a life's work I am sure!
The setting is pleasant - we four sat at the bar - and the glassware is fit for purpose - fine tulip shapes. We were served by a charming man with very good English who may have been the proprietor. He was knowledgeable, informative and enthusiastic about educating us about a product he really loves. He also listened carefully to our comments and responded in ways that helped us learn more - a born educator.
We had already made other plans for a meal, so didn't eat there. but can highly recommend the tasting on offer.

If you want to sample a broad range of champagnes, and learn a little in the process, this is the place to be. We were a group of four, and we chose the flight of 6 100 ml samples; (just as well we didn't attempt the 140 ml size!) Each week a new selection is on offer, from their huge range. Where each wine fitted in the overall Champagne experience (Blanc de blancs, grand cru, rose etc) was carefully explained and accompanied by detailed tasting notes.

We also shared the tasting plates, one each of the foie gras, salmon, ham and cheese, and that was plenty for dinner.

Below the bar area is the retail cellar, with hundreds of Champagnes to choose from, so if you are looking for a particular label, chances are it is available.

€33 p.p. for the champagne, and an average €15 ea. for the food platters... not cheap, but good value. Open every day from 10 am, late nights Thu. to Sat. until 11:30 pm.

We walked in off the street and made our way to the back bar with some trepidation as there seemed to be no-one around. However, the rear bar was reasonably busy and we seated ourselves at the bar. The friendly bar attendant explained the options available to us (in perfect English) and explained the various characteristics of each of the 6 available (by the glass) champagnes. We tasted 2 each - all different and we were not disappointed. They were all very good. The glasses were more than a taste (10cl) and great value at Euros 5.50. We left and promised to return the next day for more tastings.

As it turned out, the next day we decided to sit in the garden of our B&B with a bottle of champagne so we returned and asked for a cold bottle to take away (one we had tasted the previous day and loved!). Our friendly bar attendant, without prompting, offered an "ice bag" (filled with ice) and the loan of 2 glasses. Great service!!!! We didn't try other establishments so can't compare, but we would without hesitation return here again.
