Comfort Suites Epernay

We arrived at this hotel, sans luggage, tired and cranky. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The location is a bit out of town, so if you do not have a car, expect to walk some. It is about 2-3km from Champagne Row, and about the same from the main part of town.
The rooms are not what you would expect, at least in ours, the toilet was in a small separate room on the opposite side of the room from the shower. The wifi worked well, as I came to find out is something very nice to have as we went along on our trip. It is a good basic hotel, if you are coming into Epernay chances are, you are not there to relax in the hotel room. It is a toss up as if I would stay here or the Ibis in the centre of town which I have stayed at before.

Stayed for one night with 2 new borns and a dog en route to the French alps. We had a decent room, with a mezzanine bed room. We had read reviews so were aware that although there is a kitchenette, no crockery/cutlery is provided. Travelling with new borns we needed a microwave and fridge, so this was a good option. The hotel does not feel like it is in epernay itself as it is a decent walk from town and there is not much the immediate vicinity. However, for a stop over to/from the tunnel it is fine. Highly recommend the buffet breakfast which would put many 3 and 4 star hotels to shame.

Booked an overnight stay at the Comfort Suites to explore Epernay whilst travelling around France.

The hotel is hard to find and is miles away from the main drag. Easy 40 minute walk through a few dodgy looking areas so a taxi is recommended, not bad value at 10e or so.

Reception is well manned with a bunch of young guys who seem a little more interested on having a cigarette outside and chatting rather than helping. Although they were friendly enough and spoke ok-ish English.

The room and atmosphere of the place is very strange. The corridors are dark and musty which reminded me of a student hall residence whilst the rooms have an eery hospital feel. The bathroom was straight out of a hospital and didn't have a shower facility - just a shower attachment at waist height. We checked in a nipped out for drinks and returned to find our towels have been moved and folded and a few toiletries missing. Our towels hadn't been used and it had only been a few hours after our check in, which doesn't warrant a clean.

Reported to reception that evening, which took some doing as they couldn't understand, but confirmed a room key was used to access our room whilst we were out though said that they didn't and wouldn't have cleaned/gone into the room.

All a little strange and added to the tense and strange atmosphere of the building.

WiFi was available though couldn't connect due to weak and unreliable signal. Bed wasn't rock hard and the kitchenette in the room didn't have anything in it. So no pans, plates, etc. Reception can provide a kit to use.

Wouldn't even recommend as a cheap base for exploring Epernay as it's too far away from the main area.

Stayed for one night in May. The staff were helpful and friendly even though we didn't speak any French. Stayed in the far building which was incredibly clean and well maintained. Wi-Fi worked well. Breakfast for 8 Euro's was well worth it! The buffet is awesome! Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to stay here.

Admittedly we tried to check-in early because one of our party felt unwell and the remainder of us were going off to a champagne tasting, sadly without him (sorry Jim, we missed you!). The receptionist couldn't find our booking. I had booked 2 double & 2 twin rooms via Hotels.com nearly a year ago and paid in full. She duly took down one of the reference numbers and asked us to return at 2.00pm. Because I saw a group of people (apparently guests who were attending a wedding) being given their keys/rooms, I decided to stay put & press her on helping us. It took her 30-40 minutes to find our surnames, one by one, from somewhere on her computer. I voiced my dissatisfaction when she broke off from serving me to complete a check-in for a colleague, which I can only presume was going a lot easier! Very, very unsatisfactory from a customer perspective. I agree the building is impressive and promises more than it delivers. Very clinical & functional but no sign of luxury and the staff seemed to just be going through the motions, doing the bare minimum - most kept disappearing outside the front door for a cigarette! We didn't bother with the breakfast as we preferred to find somewhere with more atmosphere

When approaching the hotel, the grand facade reminds us why the old adage rings true:
"don't judge a book by it's cover".

The inside is what looks like an old beat up dorm hall... to be honest- I'm not too far removed from College to say that this is a large downgrade compared to the average dorm hall setting. The hallways, elevator, rooms... badly dated. We were fortunate enough to receive a room with a loft, which was pretty cool. BUT - The shower did not work. Some serious hardware issue. The TV made the loudest ringing sound that it had to be unplugged. My parents' room was never made up one day. All of these "gotchas", as you will SURELY find a few of your own--- PLUS the fact that the hotel is just not that good... make it a solid two.

Other factors:
The internet was free, although its strength was weak.
It's location is outside the city, as others have noted.

I WILL SAY THIS:
It's not awful if you want a cheap option in the area to splurge on dinners and champagne. Don't feel bad if you want to do this! It works. at $100 or less a night, the value is nearly there.

Room Tip: Request a loft if you want a more unique feel.

An interesting historic building on the outside but just a boring economy hotel on the inside.

We booked this because it seemed a notch above the usual cheap transit hotels. Wrong! Though the building is a very interesting ex - barracks, with (no doubt) an interesting history, there is no reference to this once you are inside. The standard check -in desk was staffed by a very pleasant and helpful person. The room was standard budget hotel. Disappointingly, although it is described as a 'suite' hotel, and there is a microwave and a kettle, if you want any crockery or cutlery, you have to go back to reception and pay a deposit. The surroundings are suburban housing - forget historic Epernay, which is half a mile away.

If all you want is a budget hotel, well, maybe this is OK. But don't be fooled by the pictures on the website. It's another budget hotel once you get through the front door.
