I wrote the first review of this restaurant a few years ago. We have eaten here each year since on our return journey from the south and are never disappointed.
The welcome was warm on our first visit and has increased year by year. The couple who run it are lovely and have suffered because of the economic climate, like most businesses in Europe and the UK. They have changed the pricing structure on the menu and the decor to keep up to date, and find their place in the local market, and this year was busier than last.
The wine we chose was a Corbiere at 16Euro a bottle, and I enjoyed it very much. The starters of king prawns, smoked salmon and goats cheese were all excellent, and the mains of steaks (3 of us) and chicken were also lovely. The sauces served with the steaks were great accompaniments to the tender and tasty meat.
Desserts were also tasty and beautifully served.
So, another great meal, and yes we will be back there again next year. We almost think the end of the holiday is something to look forward to, we definately look forward to our next visit to Le Barentin.

Even though this was not our first choice (midweek January so we found other restaurants closed) it was a pleasant alternative. The welcome was warm and the bright decor made an otherwise damp evening go well. The food is tasty and served in large portions. The Salade Chevre was a highlight of the starters. We really enjoyed the chicken and steak with 2 different sauces. It is not high dining but it is friendly and tasty and I would go again.

We were well greeted and sat at a corner table (where we couldn’t watch the chef on TV!). The décor and atmosphere is warm and friendly.

The menu is simple, and observing what other diners were being served (huge portions) we elected to have just two entrees each. We had the veloute of seasonal vegetables, which was very clean and fresh but with absolutely no seasoning so very bland. Served with crunchy croutons and finely grated cheese, it was pleasant after adding some salt. My husband chose the prawns on a skewer (still in the shell so a bit messy to eat) – they were well cooked but again lacking in flavour. I had a generous entrée portion of Gravlax salmon served with a tiny shot of vodka. Ironically enough I found the salmon to be of good texture, but oversalted! Each dish was accompanied by limpish salad greens overwhelmed with a sweetish (balsamic) dressing. My husband ordered a creme brulee but it was unavailable that night.

I must add here that all the other diners were eating their huge portions with great relish and only clean plates were returned to the kitchen. It is quite possible that our choice of dishes was a bit unfortunate but I can only report on what we ate.

The restaurant was not busy – four single tables, and three couples. The service by the one waitress was OK but she seemed a bit preoccupied chatting with some diners who were obviously regulars.

Two odd comments that don’t impact on the restaurant review: (1) We couldn’t work out why the waitress was wearing a chef’s blacks and hat – and (2) Maybe gas fireplaces are a sideline for the proprietor, but in addition to those which were burning brightly to add to the ambience there were at least three or four around the place which were just advertising (complete with cardboard flames).

I believe that Le Barentin would be better than the restaurant at the Mercure, but still wish we had been bothered to walk into town in search of TA’s No 1 or 2.

I wrote the first review of this restaurant a few years ago, and each time we are in Orleans on our return journey from the south we have eaten here. The couple who own the restaurant remember us each year although it's only once a year that we go, and are always very welcoming.
The decor has changed this year, more modern rather than the fresh flowery interior they had previously, but the tv screen showing the chef at work in the kitchen is still a feature.
The choice of wines is very good, and the menu covers all tastes and price ranges. They now offer a fixed price 2 or 3 course meal from the a la carte menu too. The portions are obviously smaller on this.
We had smoked salmon with vodka, and the grilled prawns as starters, and the house burger, and the fillet steak with 2 sauces for mains all accompanied by the best home made hand cut chips. Cafe gourmand was lovely to finish, as was the chocolate mousse. The Corbiere was so good we managed 2 bottles!!
All in all a really great evening and well worth what it cost. If we lived near Le Barentin it would be our regular place to eat.
It's the best thing about our holiday being over and I look forward to next year.

Not interested people. We stayed in Hotel Escale Oceania Orleans, so it was nearby, next time we look for an other restaurant.
