“If your travelling by train, good value”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

This was a first overnight stop for us coming from the US and hopped straight to a train in Paris. Very tired from a 2 hour delayed flight, the hotel is accesible from the station by overpass, where the public lift was broken. Then the hotel's entrance is a stairway again, no elevator. But we were happy with the room on the lobby floor and the free upgrade. It was spacious. Only thing, since we were so delayed, we went to a museum the next morning. And tried to rush back for the 11:30 checkout. At 11:30, a knock on our door to remind us of checkout time.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room next to the lobby, no complaints.

Three of us stayed overnight en route from the south-west of France to the channel tunnel. The room was clean, and imaginatively presented - moroccan red and yellow walls, indian wall hangings and a huge gong above the bed; there is no lift so you might need help with bags and there is no parking outside. You can drop off bags at the door and then we parked in one of the nearby streets. The location is good to explore Orleans. Free wi-fi, flat screen TV, comfortable beds but two rather old towels between three of us caused some discussion in the morning....Breakfast was fine...no real choice but what there was was good and fresh. We paid around 85 euros for a triple room with petit-dejeuner an additional 7.50 euros each.

The hotel is located just into the pedestrianised area of Orleans. You can park up very near the hotel in order to drop off your bags, but then you need to find parking elsewhere. The closest is in the shopping centre opposite, but that is very expensive. Just a couple of minutes further away is the station parking, and another car park adjoining, both of which are reasonably priced, free at night and Sundays.
On being buzzed into the hotel, we walked up the stairs (no lift) to the reception area where we were greeted by the receptionist. She was very friendly and helpful. We had booked the hotel online, but they had run our of the rate of the room which we had booked, so we were upgraded free of charge. She humoured my limited French, even though she spoke great English.
The reception area has clearly been recently decorated. It's a rather bizarre arty design, with a mannequin, murals and gaudy artwork on the walls. Not entirely unpleasant, but not my taste, either!
Our room was on the first floor above the reception - again, we had to carry our bags up the narrow stairwell since there is no lift. Not a problem for us, but an elderly or disabled person could struggle.
The hallway to the room was rather dark and shabby. The walls were very rough and dented with poor paintwork. The carpets were thin and rather worn and grubby. When we walked into our room, my first impression was that it looked a bit sad. It was very small and cramped and made me wonder what the cheaper room we had missed out on was like! The bed had a bit of a tatty cover on it, and there was only one small pillow in the middle of the head area.
However, on closer inspection, I decided the room was fine. There was one more (albeit thin) pillow in the wardrobe which meant that my husband could have something that amounted to one normal pillow. I'm quite happy without, so we didn't try asking for more. Pulling back the top cover, the bed was very clean and surprisingly comfortable. The room has been redecorated recently; the wallpaper was novel - newspapers and spines of books to make it look like a library, although unfortunately this made the already small room seem even smaller and darker. The floors have had laminate laid recently, but the floor underneath wasn't levelled first, and it is incredibly wobbly, making it feel like you're drunk or on a boat even first thing in the morning!
The bathroom door is about six inches from the head of the bed, which meant there wasn't much privacy for whoever was inside. Again, it was very small, but had a bath. There was a shower connection, but this didn't have a wall mount, so it wasn't possible to have a proper shower. However, the water was very hot and fast-flowing, so that was a bonus.
The location of the hotel made up for its shortcomings. It was an easy stroll to the cathedral and main areas for restaurants and bars. We seriously lucked out because we stayed during the celebrations for the 600th birthday of Joan of Arc. The cathedral had an amazing light display that evening, the like of which I've never seen before, even though I didn't understand too much of the commentary!
All in all, I'd probably try one of the other local hotels first, and certainly wouldn't want to pay top dollar for this one, but if I was stuck for somewhere to stay in Orleans and this was hte only place available, I'd still book it.
