Owner description: Open every day of the year ! The medieval fortress dominates the village with its austere facade. But don't be daunted: the open drawbridge is an invitation to enter into the refined lodgings of a great lord. It is the most fully furnished castle of the Loire Valley. The hushed ambiance of the rooms and the splendor of the great reception halls will plunge you into the daily life of a 15th century prince. You will relive the event that distinguished the history of the locale: the wedding of Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany, recreated with strikingly realistic wax figures. In the park, you will discover the recreated construction site of France's oldest keep. The promenade, punctuated with playgrounds and the tree house, can be followed through cedars and sequoias to the gazebo overlooking the Loire.

Great chateau, with well presented rooms (both set up and info in English) giving a great perspective. Beautiful parks and courtyard behind. Really felt like somewhere that you could envisage people living, set in a charming town.

Your first glance of the Castle comes when you cross the magnificent Langeais Bridge. Next to the Loire River, easy to reach, it catches the eye with its style. Simple but well restored to its previous glamour as the last owner, Mr.Jacques Siegfried, who bought it in 1886, had a passion with the Middle Ages history. After decades of efforts and a lot of money spent, he gave it to the French Institute, to which it belongs until now. Besides the ground floor, there are 3 more floors to visit. All the rooms are carefully furnished and the walls are covered with very precious tapestries. On the 3rd and last floor, in the Hall of the Worthies, the tapestries are dedicated to famous heroes. The wax mannequins give a special atmosphere to the wedding of Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany, a very important historical event. I have to mention the tiles of the floors for their bright colours and complicated 15th c. patterns, the exhibition with items of high quality, all for sale and the Chemin du Ronde (Rampart Walk) at the top, from where the view is marvellous. The drawbridge of the Castle is raised and lowered every day, at the opening and closing time.

This place makes history interesting and easy to understand. There are tableaux and exhibits well displayed and described both inside the chateau and in the interesting grounds. Great for anyone from 10 upwards but not so good for those who find stairs difficult.

Not only is the chateau worth visiting for its architecture, but also for the information imparted. There are English laminated cards in each room detailing the room and it's contents of furniture, art, and tapestries. There is a 10 minute English presentation with mannequins, a tapestry display of the 9 Worthies, a faiance display room. All in all, an interesting informative site.

So maybe this is not the biggest Chateau in the Loire, but it sure is one of the most interesting. The first experience starts when you turn the corner and there it is, standing regal and imposing right in the centre of Langais. The next experience is more intimate, when you walk into each room and see the way in which they have been furnished - just like people are still living there. Information cards in each room explain what the room was used for and what the key features in the room are. The numerous tapestries are intricate and a delight. We didn't go with children but there were hands-on activities in the castle itself to keep them interested and amused. The final experience was the garden. Again very interesting but especially so for children with lots of stories and imagination play, and of course the fantastic tree house. Can easily spend 90mins+ in the castle and 60mins+ in the garden, longer in the latter if you have children. Toilets are easily accessible and clean. No food shops in the castle precinct but plenty of choice outside, from Michelin to basic.
A great way to spend up to half a day in Langais. Good value for money.
