This is the best place we have stayed in. The rooms themselves were marvellous, the location was just brilliant and the hosts lovely.

The pictures on tripadvisor just do not do the place justice.

Highly recommended.

This was a wonderful place for our two families to stay. It was beyond our expectations !!
Paola and Peter could not have been better. They were so concerned with our comfort and enjoyment.
The castle is incredible, the pictures can not possibly show it's true beauty.
I feel very fortunate to have stayed in such a magical place.
Hopefully we will be back !!

“Restorative for the Soul between Urban Adventures.”

I booked two nights at the chateau, with the intent to rest, as we were a group of six (2 teens, 2 young adults, 2 parents) driving from Biarritz to Paris. We had spent five days in London prior to our time in Biarritz and all of us were road and city weary.

The location and the chateau are breathtaking. As we crossed the moat and stepped into the courtyard, it was as if we stepped back in time to the 14th century and into sanctuary. The gardens are lovely and the accommodations are the perfect combination between medieval and modern.

Peter and Paola have owned the chateau for thirty years. Their love for it is evident. They are superb hosts and are extremely knowledgeable regarding the history of their home. Peter gave us the most fabulous tour of the village directly under the chateau property and a fascinating history lesson as well.

If traveling on a Sunday, be aware that almost all restaurants are closed. Be sure to bring groceries for your stay if you rent the apartment, as the kitchen is well equipped and you may find you do not want to leave the property (as did I). Take every opportunity to explore and pay special attention to the graffiti carved into the limestone throughout the walls and towers. It's very interesting. Peter and Paola have written a thorough history of the chateau and published it on Wikipedia. You may want to read it before, during, or after your stay.

“Truly atmospheric medieval castle. Enjoyable peaceful retreat. Wonderful”
Reviewed April 12, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Our visit was most enjoyable. The owners Peter and Paola were very welcoming, giving much information for visits to other Chateau's in the region, restaurants and places of interest to visit.
The history of the Chateau de Ranton is oozing all around. One could just imagine being there in the many battles in the area, including the hundred year war. The accomodation was comfortable, beautifully decorated and warm. The gardens were a pleasure to look at and tended with loving care. At this time of year, April the pool was not open but I can imagine it to be great in the summer.

Chateau de Ranton is an amazing. It's a kids and adults dream come true to live in an authentic French castle. The castle itself is steeped in history, with so much of it is on show and there to explore.

The owners of chateau de Ranton Peter and Paola were wonderful hosts. From the simple booking process, directions to the warm welcome and hospitality throughout the holiday. They were an endless source of information, sharing their intimate knowledge of the area, where to eat and what to do. They were just so helpful and kind.

Peter showed us around the castle, including the dry moat and the entire underground village! It was an amazing glimpse into the past.

I cannot recommend this place enough. The accommodation was lovely, the place immaculate and incredibly helpful and courteous hosts top off what was a quite lovely holiday.

I fully intend visiting again in the summer to see the castle grounds in full bloom.

“Wonderful chateau in a lovely part of France”

Lovely chateau, well appointed apartments with every care taken to meet all our needs. Very warm and thoughtful hosts who could not do enough to make our stay special. We were greeted with drinks and nibbles in the chateau garden and it all just kept getting better.
The chateau is very peaceful and we both could have just spent our time relaxing there however the teenagers needed exercising once in awhile (despite the pool, moat for football and a table tennis table.
There was plenty to do within a 40 minute drive. Can't wait to return!

“My special place to take special friends”

I have stayed with Peter and Paola at Chateau de Ranton on several occasions now and am already looking forward to the next time. Their welcome on arrival is so warm and friendly. I feel like family. The tranquility of the chateau envelopes you so a few days feels like a week. Their ideas for where to go when you want to lift yourself out of relaxation mode are always on the mark - be it a wander around the nearby Fontevraud Abbey, exploring towns like Chinon or Saumur,a walk in the park at Richlieu, taking in the grand chateau as well as the lesser ones, marvelling at Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions, wine and cheese tasting, golf, ballooning.... I booked the beautiful, but homely, apartments at the Chateau for a Big Birthday and invited my closest friends to what is now my absolute favourite restaurant. Paola helped with all the bookings and made the week a stunning success. My friends were bathed in warm hospitality so the birthday week was extra special.
