On a week long stay in Chinon this was the second meal we had, after consulting TripAdvisor. We ate al fresco and the setting was nice, tables under trees in the centre of town, spoilt only by the constant circulation of local traffic and youngsters revving motor scooters around the square. Not the restaurant's fault, I know. However, service was quite slow and the initial 'greeting' staff seemed young and inexperienced. After about an hour we had only had the 'amuse bouche' and an aperitif, but still no meal. However, a more senior and very pleasant lady maitre-d came on the scene and service got into gear. I can't say we had a BAD meal, but it was just a bit lack-lustre and, to be honest, a bit lacking in flavour. And not particularly cheap. You might enjoy a meal here, dear reader, but we had at least two considerably better meals later in the week.

the menu is good, if pricey. I had the local speciality Ris de Veau and kidneys. I felt the kidneys were overdone - rubbery, most unusual for France. All other parts of the meal excellent see pic of cheeseboard. We tried to book for the night before but they said they were full. However, when we looked after having a drink next door loads of tables, particularly inside, were empty and this attitude to booking and availability is reflected in many of the reviews here - also as mentioned the manageress and the waitress seemed to be at loggerheads all night. When we asked about eating inside, which was empty, they just looked aghast - OK it was a nice evening but at these prices I expect a decent table and chairs - not a rickety outdoor table in the town square , shared with loads of others in close proximity not to mention the pigeons and cars......

We came here for dinner on a Thursday night in Chinon and had a spectacular meal. This is a family run restaurant that turns out excellent versions of traditional French food using mostly locally sourced ingredients from the Loire. We tried two of the menus (the 29 euro Decouverte du Cocher and the 43 euro Menu Saveurs) and found both to be a great value with consistently well executed food. The lamb dish ("Découverte des saveurs autours de l'Agneau Touraine-Anjou) was a particular standout - a trio of lamb brochette with rosemary, roasted lamb loin, and a decadent terrine made from lamb neck and shoulder. Nice selection of local wines (very reasonably priced) and a worthwhile cheese tray. Service was friendly and attentive. We ate very well during our two weeks in France but this meal was a particular standout. We booked our table only a few hours in advance, but early booking is probably useful on the weekends.

Nice carte, and beautiful selection of wines, good service from the sommelier, professional and interesting, otherwise the rest of the service was average.
The dishes look nice, modern but look better than they taste, just ok.
I would say they seem to give a sophisticated idea of their cuisine and service but the truth is a bit different.
