Au Chapeau Rouge is a classic, the nice thing about this place is, that thez really use local ingredients like goat cheese, poire tappées, aspergus and serve fish from the Loire. The meals, not inexpensive are very well cooked, the ambiance very "France Top Bistro" like and the service generally quite efficient. This restaurant is to be recommanded for everybody who likes to sample the real "Loire Valley" Cuisine.

The medieval town of Chinon is located in the heart of the Val de Loire resting by the banks of the majestic Vienne river. In Chinon the winding streets up to the castle are lined with small shops, inns, and cafes. It is a town well worth a visit to browse the many shops or to lunch at one of its fine restaurants. One of them is “Au chapeau rouge” (The red hat)
Today "Au Chapeau Rouge" provides both traditional and gastronomic food. This restaurant’s cuisine is based on good food and the use of local produce. When in season they use dried pears from Rivarennes, fresh fish from the Loire river, saffron from Preuilly on Claise, etc.
Lovely atmosphere on a shady terrace, providing a nice place to rest, especially during a very hot summer. Friendly and professional staff.
For 20€ (weekday lunch) there is a great menu, dishes very nicely presented and absolutely delicious. Desserts are a must. Very good value for money. Don’t forget to order dry white Chinon wine. A perfect match.

Quintessential French restaurant on the beaten track as Chinon is popular with Brits, Australians, Canadians and Americans. This is a jolly good bistro, with an excellent ambience. Nice spot for lunch on a warm day. As others have said, service is on the slow side but the quality is good for the price. There are plenty of similar places in the town, others more quain,t but overall this hits all the spot.

We ate here in late July and although it was difficult to make a reservation, we were very glad we had as it was full to bursting. We ate on the terrace in the square in the late evening. Service was quite slow (took 30 mins to take our order - although we were served our aperitifs right away so the wait was tolerable). Food was very good.
