It is difficult to add to the many reviews here. The hotel is simply beautiful and the owners are very attentive and keen to help their guests

I read a review in which disappointment was expressed over the early closing time for the bar. For us this was no disappointment - on the contrary it was a great relief to stay in a hotel which is quiet and peaceful with no late night drunken behaviour.

If I could make one improvement it would be a little more variety in the breakfast - maybe some cereal and a cooked breakfast option

I am pleased that, as your son, you love your stay with us.
Customers like you are always welcome, because you are very kind and polite !
You understand that, close the bar early, keeps quiet hotel, as you said so well: "with no late night drunken behavior".
For cereals at breakfast, I continued to say that the 3 Varietal bread, I suggest, come from the organic agriculture, as flours are whole, without adding artificial products or additives. this is why my bread will be better than cereals, industrial and full of sugar.
Hello to all your nice family, I keep your photo in our album.
Best regards from the sunny Chinon

We stayed only 2 nights on our way back to the UK and we're already planning on returning next year. We stayed in the little gardener's hut in the courtyard which was lovely to be away from the rest of the hotel. There were plants and flora all around the hut and also a small table and two chairs. However, the main hotel where you go for breakfast is just as charming with more plants and flora around the terrace where tables are set for breakfast and also for drinks later in the day. The breakfast was amazing! Plenty of choice of jams (all home-made!) plus a good selection of breads, local goats cheese etc. The staff were very helpful and efficient. The location is slightly out of the town - but just a short walk to restaurants and bars so that's no problem and the location was very quiet. All in all we couldn't believe this hotel carries only 2 stars!

Room Tip: The gardener's hut had a foot board at the end of the bed, which caused some slight discomfort f...

Chère Amanda
When you return from vacation to England, you chose to stay with us in the "little gardener's hut."
this is actually the simplest of all the hotel rooms, facing the main building, with a small terrace garden.
My team and I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel, where reign, simplicity, the real life of la belle France!
See you next year, on the road to your holidays!

Hotel Diderot is in a lovely old house about a fifteen minute walk to the old part of Chinon where there are restaurants and bars (the hotel does not have a restaurant). The hotel is being renovated room by room. The renovated rooms are lovely, not large, but done with taste. The owners have opted to cover the walls with fabric, which is a much more expensive option than paint or wallpaper and looks it. I do wonder, however, how sensible this is in a hotel where folk are coming and going with suitcases as I'm sure tears in the fabric are not so easily repaired as a lick of paint would be. I immediately decided to leave our suitcases in the car. Our bathroom had a large walk in shower, was new and very smart with excellent quality fittings. The bed was firm and comfortable. The only negative point about the room for me was that the window was almost totally obscured by a Boston Ivy type creeper leaving only a small space for light to get in. Consequently, it made the room dark. Others may disagree and find this quaint. There is parking in the enclosed forecourt for about 10 or 11 cars and it is on a first come first served basis and cannot be reserved. Those travelling with a loaded car and who want some kind of secure parking need to be aware of this. Some reviewers have been disappointed that there is a charge of around €7 for this, but this is completely normal in towns in Europe where parking is difficult. Although only a two star hotel, it is a very upmarket two star hotel and the price of the rooms is justified. (The French system for allocating stars measures quantity not quality, it does not concern itself with things like charm, decoration or attractiveness.)

The breakfast is adequate if rather limited. There are many types of jam on offer, but only apple juice, which I am not especially fond of and found very sweet for my taste.

So why only a rating of four rather than five? Well I cannot say I found the welcome warm as some others have expressed, in fact it ranged from tepid to downright frigid from one of the sisters. There was something rather prim and prissy about the whole operation, as if the owners are more concerned with appearances than with their guests' enjoyment of their stay. There is a notice in the room asking guests to report any damage to the furniture or wall hangings "as soon as possible". A previous poster (Faypeke) has pointed out that they were asked not to sit on the bed and not to use the sham cushions as they were for decoration only. I think the management attitude can be summed up by the manager's reply to a comment about hanging a wet shirt up to dry in the window when he wrote "I just worry a wet shirt can stain the precious wall fabrics or curtains". I would certainly hate to be the guest who damaged these.

The second negative concerns the bar. The hotel has an indoor bar and outdoor tables around a courtyard full of beautiful plants, but you cannot get a drink after 8.30 pm. Now perhaps you could argue that serving drinks after this time could disturb other guests (do people really go to bed at 8.30 pm?) but that is no reason why the indoor bar could not be open later. We came back from dinner in town and thought how nice it would be to enjoy a glass of cognac on one of these tables, before bed. Unfortunately, we arrived back at 9 and were informed by the owner that the bar was closed, before he added primly "you were informed of this when you checked in". So if you go into town to eat, stay there for your nightcap.

Room Tip: Check whether you are allocated one of the renovated or unrenovated rooms, there is a huge differenc...

What motivates me the most is the "goal" and I'm sure you understand that 95% of our customers reserve to the hotel for sleep quality and tranquility of this place.
You will understand why the bar closed at 8:30 p.m., and not at 22.00 as 15 years ago, just 'cause the gents wanted silence and not late chatter.
We indicate, although gladly, all kinds of open bar with terrace or not, dancing or games ....
In any case you appreciated the reason for our success, and that's a good thing!
Yours faithfully
Your host

We stayed here last year and put it on our schedule again this year - we were not disappointed. The hotel is just a short walk from the many attractions and restaurants/bars of Chinon. This hotel is simply bed and breakfast with drinks available on the terrace all day - a most relaxing way to spend a bit of time reading or just chatting before heading out for the day or for evening meals. The athmosphere is added to by the abundance of plants, shrubs, climbers etc around the well manicured courtyard and terrace. The rooms are very comfortable and well furnished. The breakfast is not the usual bacon and egg type but a well presented selection of very healthy options with a large variety of jams to chose from as well as goats cheese, wallnuts, chives, honey, a selection of breads and crossants, all of which adds up to quite a unique style of breakfast.
We were delighted to have spent a few more nights at this location and would highly recommend it for quality and value.

What a superb hotel. The effort and skill put into designing the rooms fusing old and new, use of colours and textures made this one of the best hotels we have stayed in on regular visits to France. If they did Dinners, then I suspect this would rank as one of the great hotel experiences available. The welcome was great, friendly competent and helpful staff who spoke better English than we did French. Breakfast in the sunny/shaded/dappled courtyard really set us up for the next part of our journey.
And of course Chinon is a beautiful historic town with strong historical links to England.
Well worth it and we shall be back.

Room Tip: If asked, the staff will suggest a range of restaurants in the town centre, just a few minutes away...

Bonjour SimonlG2

It is always very amusing to read new comments from new customers.
It gives me great pleasure to share with my family and my team, all your comments, they help us move in the right direction.
You loved the breakfast on the terrace .... I'm sure you would like breakfast near the fireplace too!
Your room as the 23 rooms are with fabrics on the walls, all are different, in order to give each, a French spirit.
And finaly you do not forget to talk about the town of Chinon, with its rich historical past with the Kingdom of England, whose kings were, among the great builders of the Royal Fortress
Merci pour tout

Hotel Diderot is an extremely original experience. Chinon is absolutely beautiful, the weather was perfect for our stay and the hotel made it really special. It is old and full of character. The room was smallish but very well designed, with good storage spaces and very lovely decor. The bathroom was sparkly clean and modern, with a fantastic shower (though no toiletries except soap).
The terrace and front garden bit of the hotel is absolutely stunning: a lovely place to sit for a drink.
The service was excellent: friendly and helpful.
We will almost certainly return to Chinon, as one afternoon/evening was too short, and we would definitely stay here again.

chère Odbert,
You just realize that a day / evening it is not enough to visit the Loire valley ...
For your next visit, I will give you for each day, the best places to see, without too much kilometers, and alternating visits to wineries, castles, canoe trips on the rivers, walks on the paths in the vineyards or forests ...
Here is a very busy schedule that awaits you!
Thank you very much for your visit, for your kindness,
Laurent

Wow. This hotel was amazing. The service was very friendly, the breakfast was delicious (especially the jam), and the rooms were very comfortable and very clean. The hotel was one of the highlights of our France trip, and I miss it already. We plan on coming back next year!
