Loire Valley Retreat

This was our first holiday with a baby in tow (7 months old) and we were slightly worried about how it would go. We needn't have been! Charlotte & Jerome had thought of everything: from the box of toys left in the room to the home cooked baby food every evening.

For the grown ups it was also great. The chateau is in a lovely setting, the rooms are comfortable and the food was very good. But what makes it excellent is the hosts. Charlotte and Jerome are really friendly and welcoming and have created a wonderful atmosphere at their charming hotel. There are so many little touches (that you don't get at other places) that add up to an excellent holiday.

Room Tip: This is also a place we'd stay without kids but would ask for the Boulangerie as it is a bit fur...

We found the Loire Valley Retreat on a website advertising family friendly locations. It looked beautiful and just what we were looking for, and on our arrival we were certainly not disappointed. In fact the beauty of the chateau and its location surpassed all our expectations. The chateau itself is stunning and the rooms are tastefully and thoughtfully furnished. The grounds are lovely and spacious and surrounded by beautiful countryside as far as the eye can see.

The children loved the outside space with its playground, trampoline, swimming pool and vast gardens. They fed the goats and donkey in the evening, and collected fresh eggs from the hens which they wrote their names on and kept for breakfast the following morning.

No review would be complete though without mentioning the owners, Charlotte and Jerome. They could not have been more helpful or friendly. Being parents themselves they recommended brilliant days out with the kids, from child friendly chateaux to picturesque picnic spots. Nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel very welcome (and Jerome has an excellent taste in wines!).

Hopefully we'll be back next year!

We booked Loire Valley Retreat on the strength of the reviews on Trip Advisor and I'll admit that before we arrived I thought it might not live up to my expectations. Well I was totally wrong about this - from the minute we arrived it felt more like we were staying with friends rather than at a business. This is testament to the delightful owners, Charlotte and Jerome, of whom nothing is too much trouble and whose passion for their chateau and the local area and lifestyle is abundantly apparent. The food (and wine, lots of wine) was amazing and the childrens meal at 6 is an inspired idea as well as being excellent value. We stayed for 10 nights and ate at the chateau almost every night despite there being numerous high quality restaurants in the immediate area.

Our children loved the garden and play area and the daily animal feeding quickly became a highlight. The pool was just the right size and temperature and we spent whole days there. Our rooms (Grenier a Sel with the adjacent turret childs room) were well-equipped, spacious and kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay.

The local area is beautiful and very interesting. Recommended days out are the gardens of Chateau Villandry, Saumur and Chinon Fortress. The visiting child minder was a great idea and allowed us to explore areas we couldn't have visited with children.

We would definitely like to return one day.

Room Tip: The only negative during our stay was that our sleep on three nights was disturbed by crying infants...

My husband and I stayed at the Loire Valley Retreat for 4 nights in August - it was a wonderful stay. The accommodations are part of an old chateau that has been completely renovated. Charlotte and Jerome were great - always making sure you had everything you needed. The grounds are huge - sitting areas, animals, pool. Many families were there at the same time, but the kids are not an issue (if you are a couple looking for a quiet, restful place, it is here) - lots for them to do.....

You do need a car - location is isolated - peaceful and wonderful.....

We stayed in the Boulangerie - it was perfect! The inside still had some of the original materials - stone on the walls and the bakery oven - unique! The main floor had a tv, couch with coffee table, and a kitchen table and chairs. Upstairs was the bedroom - king size, ultra comfortable bed (AC unit available if needed) and the large bathroom with tub and shower. Rooms were cleaned each day....

Breakfasts consisted of yogurts, cereals, meats, cheeses, soft-boiled eggs, breads, etc. Lots of choice for everyone....

We opted to have dinners at the Retreat - each morning the menu was posted and if there were any special food restrictions, you just needed to let Charlotte know. The food was some of the best we had in France. Various bottles of wine from the area are for sale - nice way to try some different wines.

We did a wine tour with Alain (arranged prior to going through Charlotte). We went to 3 very different wineries - recommended.

From here we went to Paris (travelling a month now) - should have done the Loire Valley Retreat as our final stop - dead quiet nights for sleeping, great accommodations, convenient dining option, friendly and resourceful hosts, wonderful grounds.....

You really need to stay here to appreciate how unique and wonderful this property is.....

We are a couple without children and stayed here for 5 days in July. The property is lovely and it is perfectly located for wine tasting and touring the Loire Valley. Charlotte and Jerome are perfect hosts and couldn't have been more accommodating. I do feel it is worth noting however that this really is a family destination rather than one for couples/singles/groups without children. I think all the other guests had children with them and although the children were all lovely there is a different dynamic when they are around. This isn't a criticism at all but I feel it is worth noting as some people may simply want to sit around and relax on holiday and this wasn't always possible.

Many thanks for taking the time to post a review, and we are very glad to hear you enjoyed our hospitality, the food, the wine and the wonderful setting that Chateau de Chargé provides. You are absolutely right, we are a particularly family friendly location (as many of the reviews on this site attest) - and as parents ourselves we are proud to be so. Those wishing to enjoy the delightful ambiance of Chargé without children would be wise to avoid July and August as these are the European school holidays. We hope to have the pleasure of your company again one day. Kindest regards, Charlotte

We stayed in La Boulangerie for 2 nights at the end of our vacation and truly wish we could have stayed longer. Jerome and Charlotte were kind, gracious, and helpful to us from inquiring about the Loire Valley Retreat until we said Au revoir to Charlotte as we pulled out. book your stay early as they fill up fast.

Our suite was gorgeous, spotless and Jerome had even hooked up wifi when we arrived. There was a mini fridge with complimentary soft drinks and a latte espresso coffee pot, that was replenished every day. The large bedroom and bathroom are upstairs. Jerome also provided a portable air conditioning unit to use upstairs.

Breakfast was delicious which included fresh croissants and brown eggs that you can cook in a boiler as you need them. We arrived on a Wednesday, the only day dinner is not served, but Charlotte made arrangements for us to eat at La chapeau rouge in Chinon. Our dinner was delicious and presented in a beautiful manner.

Our last evening we had the pleasure of joining Charlotte and Jerome and the other guests for an outdoor dinner "table d'hôte" that one of our most memorable evenings. Each couple purchased local wines from the well stocked wines and stayed together eating under the stars. Thank you both for a wonderful end to our France holiday. We truly look forward to seeing you again soon.

My husband and our teenage children visted with Charlotte and Jerome the 1st week of June after a wonderful and exhausting 5 days in Normandy. What a wonderful place to relax!! We planned staying 2 nights but ended up staying 3! We were warmly greeted and escorted to our room. Jerome gave us a tour of the Chateau and reminded us to make ourselves at home. Everything was excellent!!! Both He and Charlotte are the best hosts. They went out of their way to make a visit memorable. The accomodations and meals that were prepared by the chef was of the highest quality. Jerome's wine collect is also a must! We enjoyed it all. Loire Valley Retreat should be at the top of anyone's lists when visiting the area.
