“Highly recommended stay at Loire Valley Retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

My wife and I had a fabulous stay at Loire Valley Retreat in Chinon in early October for 3 nights. Charlotte and Jerome are made for this business. They are fantastic hosts. We enjoyed the dinners in the dining room and meeting the other guests and also getting to know our hosts. Great conversation, food and wine. It is not in the city centre so you have the peace of being away in the Loire but also only about 10 minutes from the city centre of Chinon. We highly recommend it

I have absolutely no complaints about this lovely little retreat. Charlotte and Jerome are exceptional hosts and the setting could not be more beautiful. It's out in the middle of farmland, but close enough to Chinon and other areas. The chateau has been remodeled and looks amazing with bits of history mixed with modern comforts. The chef was out sick, but Charlotte and Jerome put together amazing dinners for us. The wine selection was great and it was nice to sit and chat with the other guests. Breakfast was what seemed to be the standard in France and was just what we needed. We (myself and my husband) stayed in the Boulangerie. It had a ton of space and the bed was so comfortable. We don't have children, but two of the other couples staying had little ones and they seemed very happy with the accommodations. Be sure to take the wine tour with Alain...it was a lot of fun and very helpful to have a bilingual guide! The night before our scheduled departure, I was so sad to leave. We decided to stay an extra night instead of heading back to Paris! Luckily for us the room was available. We will most definitely stay here again when we return to the Loire Valley, hopefully for a longer stay!

Room Tip: The Boulangerie was perfect for a couple without children.

We stayed with friend's for four nights in September and it was an unforgetable experience. After five busy days in Paris, the peaceful welcome from Jerome was just lovely. It's and immediate sense of tranquility and quiet when you arrive here.
We stayed downstairs in the main house in a tastefully restored, very large room with an enormous bathroom. Everything you could need within the room. We enjoyed beauful meals cooked by Charlotte, helped by Jerome, who even dined with us on two nights. Thanks so much for making us so welcome in your restful home. Looking forward to coming back on our next trip to France. Just with Australia was closer !

We had 3 night stay in May and loved the location, the rooms, the hosts and the communal dinners were an unexpected bonus. When we booked we did not fully appreciate the way the dinners came together of a night with an in-house chef. We knew we would arrive a bit late and did not want to head back out so accepted the offer to have dinner on site that night. The two nights we did this were really special, great company at the table, sharing ideas and experiences with people from different corners of the globe. Jerome & Charlotte hosted the evenings perfectly and are wonderful company. The work they have done in bringing this special place back to life is a great tribute to their passion and persistance. They epitomise everything that makes the travel industry great for travellers like us. Bravo!

Room Tip: I don't think there would be a bad room but for the record we stayed in the La Chambre du Vigner...

We spent 2 comfortable, relaxing nights at the Boulangerie and really enjoyed our stay at Chateau de Charge. Jerome & Charlotte were very welcoming & engaging hosts. The cottage was perfect for us: we loved the sitting living room where we could enjoy our daily find of local delicacies; the complementary coffee & stocked fridge; the bedroom was super comfy & romantic while the bathroom was modern & luxuriously finished, complete with bathrobes, towel warmer and l'occitane toiletries (a lovely bonus). The property is gorgeous...enjoyed exploring the back yard & vegetable garden, observing the animals and taking in the fresh air. The self-serve full breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Great b&b for a romantic getaway or a fun-filled family holiday with children.

Spent a week in the Chateau with our two children after 2 weeks camping in the Dordogne. What a great way to end our holiday. The chateau itself is impressive, the grounds are beautiful and the remote location ideal for relaxing. The room was beautiful and clean. The meals were delicious, the hosts and their chef were great company, as were the other guests. I suppose it depends on the other guests at the time of your stay, but everyone seemed to get on and had similar interests, mainly good wine!!
Surrounding area is great for exploring, many chateaux and wine producers. Jerome, the host, taught us a lot about local wines and often let us sample his recent purchases.
Our children enjoyed the pool, the grounds, the idea of staying in a 'castle', dining with the other children, collecting eggs from the chickens for their breakfast the next day and feeding the sheep the leftover bread.
Would recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings, who enjoy good food and good wine.

My husband and I spent two nights at the Loire Valley Retreat, and I was almost in tears when we left! We could have spent weeks here! Charlotte and Jerome are the most gracious hosts - helpful but not obtrusive, warm, welcoming... just like family! We stayed in the boulangerie - and if you have the option, I strongly recommend staying there! Jerome and Charlotte have managed to retain the original character of the buildings while appointing them with pretty much any modern amenity you could ask for. L'occitaine toiletries and plush robes were very much appreciated. Quality linens, coffee and refreshments too. The property was so relaxing - sheep grazing in a nearby pasture, chickens in the coop (that laid eggs for breakfast). Everything was perfect.

We had dinner there both nights and were very impressed by the food (not to mention the wine selection)! The second night, Charlotte and Jerome joined us for dinner along with another couple staying there. It was such a fun dinner party! Ask Jerome to help you pick out a bottle of wine based on the meal you'll enjoy - he makes fantastic recommendations. Breakfast was also delicious with fresh eggs, meats, cheeses, croissants and breads, cereals and more.

Another thing I recommend is doing the chauffeured wine tour with Alain. Charlotte helped us organize this and it was one of our favorite activities during our two-week European vacation. Alain took us to some "off the beaten path" wineries, and they were all fabulous! We came away with several bottles of wine.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in the Loire Valley, look no further. Loire Valley Retreat has got it figured out. In the meantime, my husband and I are dreaming of our return!

Room Tip: The boulangerie was amazing. Separate living area, large bathroom, very private.
