I used to see European cathedrals with dark walls and sculptures.
It is only dirt.
Here they have started cleaning the walls and it is totally different atmosphere from any other similar cathedral

We took the train from Paris Garde Mount Parnasse station out to Chartres. It was included in our Navigo transportation scan cards we purchased at Charles De Gaulle after our flight arrived in Paris. The travel time was about an hour and it is a short walk from the station to the Cathedral (which you can see from the station). I believe there are also some shuttles and taxis of course. The cathedral is, alongside Reims, Sainte–Chapelle, and Notre Dame, a must see for Gothic architecture or church history fans. It also offers unobstructed views from three of its four sides which make photography more enjoyable and full proof. As others have noted, the main drag is the limited amount of English tours. So most likely you will need to read up on this Gothic masterpiece and/or use an audio guide if you prefer commentary with your site visit.

The cathedral is magnificent. If you can, definitely do not miss the laser show! It is projected on the cathedrals face. There is also a laser night walk through the city which is projected on various buildings.

Easy country train journey of an hour. Well posted for a five minute walk. No entry fee and a beautiful labyrinth on the floor from medieval times. Do not hire a private chauffeur as it cost £30 round trip to do. Staff were very helpful at the cathedral. Be prepared for the ticket staff at Chartre as their favourite phrases are tuit suite and allay!
