This is a must see place for anyone interested in the history or architecture of old churches. We were fortunate to find that Malcolm Miller still provides tours - he is unbelievable with his knowledge of all the subject matter related to the church and religion. Mr. Miller will add tremendously to your visit and is highly recommended.

Really loved it!! Took a tour with Malcolm Miller. He made the Cathedral come to life. He really knows this Cathedral and shows you things that you would have missed visiting on your own.

If you enjoy architecture and churches then you will enjoy the Cathedrale de Chartres. It is still being restored, but did not detract from the visit. In fact there was a presentation running on a TV showing how they go about the huge job of restoring a place like this. Which is really fascinating

Chartres itself was an interesting city. No big department stores (which makes a change) lots of lovely small businesses. Plenty of places to eat and reasonably priced. All from "fast food" to French "plat de jour" and Creperies.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the tour of the crypt. But the climb up the north gothic tower is well worth the effort. Great view. The labyrinth inside the cathedral was obstructed by the chairs, so I can't really walk the walk.

I first visited Chartres in 1984, when I was 16. I returned this past Christmas. From a distance, it's impressively large, but it's not very pretty. Up close, it dazzles. Seeing it now, with older eyes, I was awed by workmanship of both the stained glass and relief. I went early in the morning, stayed there for about three hours, and there were no crowds (unlike Paris). I did not take a guided tour, but if you are familiar with the Bible, you should be able to recognize much of what you see. Still, having someone with trained eyes explain what you are seeing would undoubtedly be better. It's easy to get to Chartres from Paris: go to Montparnasse station to the SNCF ticket windows. I bought an open return ticket because I did not know how long I would spend at the cathedral. It was about $30 roundtrip, and a little more than one hour each way.
