“Don't forget the less famous place”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

Went twice, by myself before and with my wife, the year after.
Imposing: when you are going on the RN from the exit of the Autoruote at a point you see the spires, fantastic!
Still fantastic and communicating you a sense of eternity walking the maze of the little road that bring you there. The external portals, three, are not a prelude to what will be found inside, are the masonry side of this wonder. The carving of the stone, with a thousand details, statues larger-than-life.
On entering the windows offer a wonderful play of colours indescribable, every window tells the stories of men with their lives coloured by something more than mere experience. So stop and look at individual pictures of each window, aided by a pair of binoculars.
What a contrast wit nearby church (Saint Peter or Saint Nicolas I forgot) , falling down, this second church needs you, give it a visit.

“magnificent Gothic art”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

What makes Chartres special to me, apart from the historic facts concerning the French Kings whose coronation took place in that cathedral, is the the way it stands, fearless & fierce, in the bread-basket of France with its towers pointing towards the sky, like the believers' hands raised in a sign of prayer. The unique rose & all other vitraux are of course something that always attracts my attention. I do not mention the intricate Gothic sculptures because I'd rather an expert broached the issue...

To me, la Cathedrale de Chartres is a favourite in the long list of French Cathedrals. A must visit, I would say....

“A must see”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

We stopped in Chartres for a night before flying back to US from Paris. The whole center city is charming, especially the old city. The cathedral is magnificent, undergoing some restoration, but not to be missed. And, not crowded. Even my non spiritual boyfriend was wowed. Of course lighting a candle for someone back home is a special moment.

“Most beautiful Vitraux - religious art in the windows XII cycle”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

It is a very beautiful cathedral, not so big, but in the second floor - where you arrive through a narrow and circular ladder- you will find the most impressive vitraux, in a very good shape. It is gothic arquitecture. If it is a sunny day is marvelous.
Its web page is www.cathedrale-chartres.org

The train station (1 hour last the trip) does not have restroom facilities, may be in the train it is. If not there are some small restaurants around the plaza. From the train station youy have to walk 4 blocks, but you see the Cathedral immediately.
