The old town is pedestrianised so you can wander at will, and there is a well marked tourist trail to ensure you see it all. The son et lumiere (April to Sept) is spectacular, and agail well signposted by a blue light trail to make sure you see it all.

The city is neat and charming. We loved walking on the streets and by the small river that surrounds the old town. Taking the small train that departs from the Cathedral in the evening for the "Chartres en Lumiere" is a must.

Unexpected huge bonus to Chartres Cathedral. 2/3 hours at a very leisurely pace shows off the best Chartres has to offer along the River Eure. From old churches to ancient walls and fortifications, it's a treasure.

When a lot of people visit Chartres they visit the cathedral and little to nothing else. The historic center of Chatres is a lovely village that include bridges, half-timbered houses and, yes, other Medieval churches too. Chartres may not be as beautiful as some French villages, but it is certainly worth an exploration. Be sure to get beyond the pricey tourist shops next to the cathedral. There is a tourist information center near the cathedral that has a guide to a town walk.

This old town, along and on islands in the little river, at times feels like medieval Europe. Some of the stone bridges, half timbered houses, small covered stairs for launching boats, and winding long stone step passages from the upper to lower town are just lovely. Nearly a kilometer RT.
