“Worth every cent!”
Reviewed December 2, 2013

My mother and I had such a lovely meal in this restaurant in June this year. We visited on a very hot day, and the charming owner insisted we sit outside by the terrace, so that we wouldn't spoil such a beautiful day. He found us a table in the shade and made sure we were comfortable. His service was impeccable. Very friendly and attentive. My mother is vegetarian and was served a big, beautiful, tasty salad that she thoroughly enjoyed. I'm a carnivore and really enjoyed my entrecote with bernaisse sauce. We both had apple tart with ice cream for puds and ate every morcel of everything served to us. If we ever return to Chartres, we wouldn't consider going anywhere else for our meal!!

“Trip Advisor said GO, and we WENT.”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

L'Escalier is within a 5 minute walk of the cathedral, but on a side street on the "back" side of the hill, and we would never have found it by chance. On a November holiday weekend, we walked in a cold rain, not knowing if l'Escalier was open - or maybe fully reserved. We found it open and empty, and enjoyed the full attention of the owner until others began to arrive a little later. There was a "menu" with 3 choices for each of 3 courses, and a "carte" with lots of other choices. Our advice is, order from the menu, which is "what's cooking today" - ordering random a la carte is asking a lot of the small kitchen. Our food was excellently prepared. The staff could not have been friendlier. On this cold, wet day the restaurant was cheerful and warm. The walls were well decorated with tasteful local art, for sale at modest prices. Finding l'Escalier is what Trip Advisor is all about.

“A great find!”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

We were staying overnight in Chartres on our way further south. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday and we were finding it difficult to locate a restaurant open on a Sunday evening. Our hotel said it would not be a problem as they had a restaurant on-site, however, upon arrival we were told they were fully booked.

We stumbled across L'Escalier purely by chance whilst on a walk around the town on Sunday afternoon, so we decided to try eating there later in the evening. The proprietor was very friendly and tolerated our poor French, even helping to teach us some new words when requested.

The food was simple, but very tasty, and all four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Would definitely return if ever in Chartres again.

“Amazing French cuisine and great value!!”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

This place is amazing! It is located cery close to the Cathedral, we went there for dinner. The menu complet (3 courses) was only 21 euro and the portions were generous. Without dessert it is only 17 euro. I had an amazing vegetable soup, veal with mixed vegetables and delicious creme brûlée. Great service too! They have an English menu and the owner spoke great English and was very helpful with the menu. A perfect meal!!

“Outstanding classic food, well prepared and served”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

We loved our beef bourgignon, veal, their sauces, the potatoes roasted and herbed, the desserts,
Figs and pear. Beautifully prepared and served. The house red, a cotes de rhone, was just right.
The espresso also. Pleasure in every bite, service friendly and low key and efficient.
