We asked for a room with a view and were thrilled to be able to see the cathedral, the library, and another church that were all part of the night light show. The room was modern and clean, and the staff was very friendly. We enjoyed walking around the upper town and visiting the Saturday market. While parking was not convenient, as others have noted, it was still close enough to be an easy walk, very doable with a rolling suitcase.

Room Tip: Rooms 332, 334, and 336 all have a great view.

If you have the chance to visit Chartres, this is a great hotel with an excellent price/value ratio. While there is not a full restaurant in the evening, light meals are available. The hotel is located a short walk from the train station and a very reasonable walking distance from the cathedrale. Several very good restaurants are nearby. The hotel seems to be owned and operated by a family committed to service.

Mercure here has no parking – you have to use the underground city parking opposite. You cannot reserve a space but it has 1,000 cars capacity. It costs 18 Euro per day. It is narrow – so be careful driving. It is big – so try to park at the hotel end as it’s a long way to haul your own luggage.

This 67 room hotel was built/opened March 2010 so everything is new. Some unusual décor choices, but styles march on. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. We booked in advance by internet and got a very good rate.

Rooms are compact because it’s well located right in the city centre, but they are not small enough to be uncomfortable. All the usual amenities – safe, fridge with complimentary bottle of water, flat screen TV (only 1 English channel/BBC World), hair dryer, tea & coffee making facilities, airconditioning, plus free WiFi (which crashes a lot) throughout hotel. Iron & board & extra bedding on request. The shower was a first for us – it had coloured LED’s in the shower head which changed colour according to temperature !!

There is a bar and breakfast area but no restaurant – Reception recommend a local bistro or pizzeria, or next door in the Best Western hotel if you want a proper meal. There are some strange opening times however – so you need to check (eg the bistro doesn’t open on Wednesdays). This applies to shops generally in Chartres.

We have now stayed at a couple of Mercure hotels in France – and found them all worthy of recommendation. We like Mercure.

Room Tip: Try for an upper room at the rear.

This was our first experience of a Mercure hotel and we were very impressed. Friendly welcome, standard room which turned out to be surprisingly large and very modern and well-appointed. The staff were very helpful, excellent buffet breakfast and all in all a lovely stay. The hotel is situated very conveniently for the city centre and all amenities and although it has no bar or restaurant, there are plenty just yards away. Parking is clearly a problem in this mediaeval city and the hotel has no parking. For those accustomed to free or cheap parking in France, the 24hr tarrif of 18.50 euros might seem a bit steep and the huge underground car-park opposite the hotel seems a bit daunting at first. The hotel website would do well to warn you about this but I'm not surprised they don't.

Room Tip: Don't pay for more than a standard room because it is excellent.
