“Ancient Abbey setting city centre hotel”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

You need to be ready to experience this wonderful hotel set in an old abbey which has been beautifully restored. This is not your normal Mercure which tends to be newish with standard hotel rooms. It is a very beautiful romantic setting with beautiful facilities. It is not the type of hotel you would normally choose on a quick mid route stopover, we think. We stayed here as part of a four day trip throuh Champagne and Bourgogne as part of a little holiday on the way to our French House. The hotel is well positioned for the City Centre where there are lots of restaurants and of course the Cathedral. We only stayed one night - a Monday and had lunch in a small cafe in the city and dined in the hotel restaurant in the evening. The hotel restaurant itself is stunning as it is in the old chapel of the abbey. However it is trying to be a 4/5* restaurant in a Mercure Hotel which doesn't quite work. The food was great, the service was cold and impassive generally with a nod to pretension - the very extensive wine list for example didn't have the wine we wanted. Now the reality check, this is a hotel with a very expensive restaurant - mains at 30 euros and starters and desserts at 12 euros+ and a wine list where the cheapest was maybe 24 euros. They do offer a set menu to residents in the evening which is advertised in the lift - for a very reasonable 26 euros for three courses but we had to ask for this menu and one of the two starters was not available. We were only able to deal with this as one of us speaks good French but for those who are less comfortable with the language they may have found this a bit difficult. If you want to come for a nice holiday in a nice city this is the hotel to stay at because it is very nice but avoid it if you like to hang around in shorts and T shirts in the evening as you'll feel uncomfortable.

The title of my review is probably the only positive about this hotel oh and the downstairs area bar etc which looks quite posh as you walk in.The lovely old building is spoilt by the concrete block on the side where some of the rooms are.The bar by the fact it is closed at 11.00pm in the evening. The bedrooms which luckily we got one in the main building are tired amd shabby same applies to the bathrooms. The bedding-pillow and duvets were cheap and nasty. The air-con so noisy we hardly got any sleep. We also thought the area was not brilliant to walk into the centre at night.

Came for the restaurant and was not disappointed. The food was excellently prepared and served, and the dining room is elegant. Rooms are comfortable. Don't miss the Bourges Cathedral.

I stayed in this hotel about 20 years ago when it had just been opened, and it was quite spectacular - a new hotel in an really old building. 20 years on and it is still quite spectacular although it is showing its age a bit. It is one of the Mercure chain so the rooms and facilities are of a good standard, although the rooms are a bit small (we had a superior room for an extra 15 euros). The downside is that it is the best hotel in this town so it attracts a mix of corporate and tour parties and both tend to take over the place, when we stayed there on June 8th, the restaurant was closed because of a corporate event. And that brings me to the staff, they are focussed on the big parties, so if you're an independent traveller you are a long way down on their list of priorities. We gave up waiting for a drink at the bar, we didn't get the extra towels we asked for and no one helped us with the luggage.

This is the poshest hotel in Bourges, located near the historic center and situated in an old abbey. You will notice it by the number of foreign visitors staying there. There is some ground parking on site with access from streets on either side of this large building. The lobby is large, with space for seats and lounge, a bar and a restaurant. But, since the building is old, the rooms and windows are small (by US standards) and the floors not easily reachable by elevators with steps up and down to access - for example - a wing facing the water well with 5 rooms or so. My friends who stayed there complained about the tobacco smoke in a non-smoking room due to poor ventilation and guest neighbors not caring about others. So, posh hotel/good location but small rooms and unwelcome cigarette smoke.

Good location within easy walk of the centre. Parking on site as well. Rooms are ok but a little dated.

We didn't eat there or have breakfast there as looked a bit pricey. 18 euro for breakfast per head.

Interesting building with thick stone walls and tall hallway, which if on the 3rd floor as I was, you can get great views from the mezzanine.
Room was small though, and very dated.
Breakfast is just continental, so a little overpriced.
